He enlisted with the militia and was transferred to the Army Artillery Unit in 1940. He served in Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, and Northwest Europe. He was discharged in 1945. He is a member of Cape Sable Branch #148. Submitted by Cape Sable Branch #148. ADAMS, Guy WWII Guy was born in Smith’s Cove, Digby County, NS. He served in the Grenadier Guard, 22nd Armoured Regiment CAOS from 1941-45. Submitted by Bear River Branch #022. ADAMS, Harlan D. WWII Harlan was born in Steam Mill, NS and has lived there all his life. He joined the Army in 1942, serving until 1946. He was with the 8th Canadian Light Anti-Aircraft Division. He has belonged to The Legion in the past. Submitted by Kings Branch #006. ALLEN, Cecil Arthur WWII Cecil was born on September 7, 1926. Despite several attempts to join the military following the outbreak of war in 1939, Cecil finally made it into the Army Reserves when he turned 15. He was 18 before he was able to sign up for regular service with the Pictou Highlanders, but his desire of seeing overseas duty was left unfulfilled. Cecil was ready to go, and they were ready to ship him out just as the war ended. He now resides in Truro and is a member of Colchester, N.S. Branch #026 Truro. Submitted by Colchester Branch #026. ALLEN, Glen Lorraine WWII Glen was born in May 1923 in Melanson, NS. He joined the Canadian Army in 1943. He served with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. In 1944, he was wounded and captured, being held as a Prisoner of War for six months. He returned to Canada in 1945, and worked for Kings County School Board as an Industrial Arts teacher for twenty-nine years. Glen passed away on December 12, 1999. Submitted by Lumsden Branch #074.

WWII KOREA Paul was born in Blockhouse, NS in 1926 and had been stationed all over Europe, until retiring and returning to Mahone Bay, NS in 1997. Paul was in the Canadian Army from 1944-46. He rejoined in 1951 and went to Korea with the Canadian Artillery and again retired in 1976 from the Canadian Forces. He then worked as a Civilian for the Canadian Forces for twenty years in various departments. Paul joined Branch #049, Mahone Bay and is an active member. Submitted by Mahone Bay Branch #049. ANDREWS, Ernest Eugene WWII Ernest was born in Port Morien, NS on March 15, 1915, the son of Harry and Margaret (Smith) Andrews. He was a Gunner in the Army from 1942 to 1943, serving in Halifax. He was discharged for medical reasons. Ernest married Clara MacQueen of Port Morien. Ernest passed away on October 15, 1974. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. ANDREWS, Herbert "Herbie" WWII Herbie was born on July 9, 1906, the son of John and Sarah Jane (MacDonald) Andrews. He was a member of the Army Provost Corps (Military Police) during the Second World War. Herbie married Ethel MacLeod. Herbie passed away on February 19, 1982 Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. ANDREWS, Kenneth Alonzo WWII Kenneth was born in Port Morien, NS on September 21, 1922, the son of John and Sarah Jane (MacDonald) Andrews. He entered the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and was discharged in 1945. He attended flying school in St. Eugene, P.Q., and he trained as an air traffic controller in Trenton. He spent most of his time in that trade in Whitehorse, Yukon. He is married to Elizabeth Smith. Kenneth spent many years as a community activist, including several years as a county councilor. He is a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #055. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. ANDREWS, Roderick James "Roddie" WWII Roddie was born on March 20, 1913, the son of John and Sarah Jane (MacDonald) Andrews. He served in the Army Provost Corps with the Military Police from late 1941 to 1943, while stationed in New Glasgow. He married Allura Jardine of Florence. Roddie was an avid sportsman and fought in several amateur boxing matches while in the army. For many years, he was the owner, trainer and driver of many well-known race horses, such as Purple Valley and Prairie Pete. Roddie passed away on April 8, 1989. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055.

www.ns.legion.ca 13 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion ANDREWS, Stanley R. WWII Stanley was born on December 19, 1917, the son of Harry and Margaret (Smith) Andrews. He served in the Canadian Army, in the North Shore Regiment “A” Company in New Brunswick from 1942-1945. He served in Canada, Scotland, England and Continental Europe. He was wounded at the D-Day landing on Juno Beach on June 6, 1944. He spent many months in the hospital in England before returning in the winter of 1945. Among his medals were the France Star and the Germany Star 1939-1945. Stanley passed away in 1967 at the age of 50. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. ANDREWS, Wilfred WWII Wilfred was born in Port Morien, NS on October 4, 1915, the son of John and Sara Jane (MacDonald) Andrews. He enlisted in July 1941, and graduated as sergeant air gunner from MacDonald Training School, MacDonald, Manitoba, in November 1942. Early in 1943, Wilfred proceeded overseas and engaged in several operational flights over enemy territory. He attained the rank of Flight Sergeant and was attached to the Royal Air Force as a member of a Halifax bomber crew. On a bombing raid over Hamburg, in June 25, 1943, his plane did not return from enemy action and he was reported missing. On August 19, 1946, Flight Sergeant Andrews was posthumously awarded the Operational Wings of the Royal Canadian Air Force “in recognition of gallant service in action against the enemy.” He was the first native of Port Morien to die on active service in World War II. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial at Englefield Green, near Egham. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. AUCOIN, Al KOREA Al was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia and now lives in Sydney, NS. He was a member of the Queen’s Own Rifles in 1953 when the official cease-fire was declared to end the Korean War. He, along with others from his regiment, and members of the Black Watch, replaced the soldiers of the Princess Patricias and the Royal Canadian Regiment who were rotated back to Canada. As a member of the Untied Nations 25th Infantry Brigade, Al served between North and South Korea along the 38th Parallel. He and his fellow soldiers performed the duties now associated with peacekeepers although such a designation did not become factual until much later. Al returned from his Korean duty in May 1955. Al is a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion and now serves Branch #012 in Sydney as the Sgt. at Arms. Submitted by Sydney Branch #012. BALCOM, Malcolm Sr. C. WWII Mac was born on February 5, 1917 at Kingston, NS. He joined the Canadian Army in 1943 and served in Canada, the UK and Europe. He returned home in 1945, farmed for 20 years in Melvern Square and moved to Middleton where he resided until his death in 1997. He was a Past President of Middleton Branch #001. Submitted by Middleton Branch #001. BALCOM, Norah P. WWII Norah was born in Spa Springs, NS on January 19, 1921. She enlisted in the Canadian Womens Army Corps in 1943, Intelligence Branch, and served in Canada and the UK, until 1945. She returned to Canada and now resides in Middleton. He enlisted in the Canadian Army Signal Corps in 1942 and served in the UK, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland, returning to Canada on December 31,1945. He now resides in Middleton, N.S. Fred joined the Legion over 60 years ago and is a Past President and Life Member of Middleton Branch #001. Submitted by Middleton Branch #001. BALL, Wilson F. WWII Wilson was born in Toronto, Ontario and grew up there. He moved to Nova Scotia after the war. He fought with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment in Belgium, and was wounded in combat at Bergen op Zoom. He passed away in 2001. Submitted by Kings Branch #006. BARR, Paul Joseph WWII Paul was born in Kingston, Ontario. He joined the Navy and retired as a CPO2. During the war, his tour of duty took him to Korea. He received KVSM and NATO Peace Keeping medals and CD and Clasp. Paul belongs to Calais Branch #162. Submitted by Calais Branch #162. BARRASS, George Roland WWII Roland was born on April 4, 1919. He served with the Canadian Army from 1940-1954 in the Pay Corp. While his hope was to be shipped overseas to participate in the war activity in Europe, the Army decided to use his accounting talents closer to home. Roland resides in Truro where a great part of his life centres around his church. Submitted by Colchester Branch #026. BARRETT, Harold "Jake" KOREA Harold was born in Bear River, NS. He served in the Royal Canadian Regiment in Korea from 1951-53, then joined the First Canadian Guards and transferred to the Black Watch Regiment in 1954, where he served until 1970 when they disbanded. While with the Black Watch, he served in Germany from 1962-65, Cyprus in 1966, and took part in the Tattoo in 1967. When the Black Watch disbanded, he served with the second battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. In 1967, he was posted to CFB Cornwallis and retired in 1976. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in March of 1943. He was posted at Botwood, NL. He was discharged in December 1945. He married Marian Redden and had ten children. Submitted by Atlantic Branch #153. BARTLETT, James Eldon WWII James served in the Royal Canadian Air Force Marine Section. Most of his time was spent at sea aboard the “O.K. Service” and other ships. He made many trips to Northern Newfoundland and Iceland. He was discharged shortly after the war ended. James was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #153 until his death in 1991. Submitted by Atlantic Branch #153. BAUDOUX, Everett (Shan) Large WWII Everett was born on January 14, 1919 in Stellarton, NS. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on March 13, 1939. He served with 233rd Bomber R.A.F. Everett was the first Canadian to attend and graduate from the Empire Test Pilots School at R.A.F. Boscome Down, Wiltshire, England. This was the world’s first Test Pilots School, now in its 64th year. Everett was one of ten pilots selected from the Royal Air Force to attend the first full twelve-month course in March 1944. When graduating in 1945, he became the first formally qualified Canadian Experimental Test Pilot. For his service to the armed forces, Everett was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, France and Germany Star with Clasp, Africa Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and War Medal C. D. with Clasp. Submitted by Stellarton Branch #028. BENNETT, Hedley "Dick" WWII Hedley was born in July 1921 in Saskatchewan. He joined The Royal Canadian Navy in October 1940 and was sent to train in Esquimalt, B.C. From November 1940 to 1945, he patrolled the Atlantic for German U-Boats. During his second trip to Murmansk, Russia, the war ended and his R.C.N. Ship found itself facing fourteen German U-Boats flying capitulation flags. He remained a member of the R.C.N. until his retirement from the force in 1965. He worked for O’Connor Cleaning Services, retiring as company manager in 1981. He is a 34-year member of the Legion. Submitted by Fairview Branch #142. BEREZOWSKI, Steven WWII Steve was born in 1919 at Janow Corners, Saskatchewan. He served in the military from 1940 to 1946 as a Dispatch Rider. Steve was stationed in West Sussex, Uckfield, Sicily and Italy. He now resides in Truro where he is a member of Colchester, N.S. Branch #26. Submitted by Colchester Branch #026.

WWII Lawrence was born in Amherst, N.S. in 1922 and lived most of his adult life around the Lunenburg County area in N.S. Lawrence joined the Royal 22nd in the Canadian Army in 1943 and served in England, Belgium, and parts of Germany and when the war ended in 1945 he was in Holland. He is still a member of Branch #049, Mahone Bay, N.S. and enjoys his wife, Betty, and retirement. Submitted by Mahone Bay Branch #049. BILLARD, Wilbert Gordon WWII Wilbert was born in June 1923 into a family of nine brothers and three sisters. He enlisted in the army in January 1943 and landed in France in July 1944, where he was part of The Liberation Of Caen and The Battle of Falaise Gap. Moving from France to Belgium, Holland and then into Germany, where he remained as part of the Occupation Forces until his return to Halifax and his discharge in July 1946. He went to work at the Halifax Shipyard until his retirement in 1983. He is a 47-year member of the Legion. Submitted by Fairview Branch #142. BLISS, Osborne Lloyd WWII Osborne was born on April 6, 1915. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on March 24, 1941 at Halifax, NS. He joined the #35 R.A.F. at Gravely, Hunts, on August 13, 1942. The Squadron bombed a variety of targets in Germany and occupied France with some of the raids in daylight. His tour of duty included Canada, United Kingdom and Europe. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Aircrew Europe Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and War Medal. Osborne was killed in action on August 24, 1943. He is buried at Berlin War Cemetery, Charlottenburg, Germany. Submitted by Stellarton Branch #028. BOIDUK, Walter V. WWII Walter was born in 1922 in Tartonovichz, Poland. He immigrated to Canada and settled in New Glasgow, NS. He served convoy duty with the Canadian Navy. Submission “Unknown.” BONNELL, William Joseph WWII William was born in Port Morien, NS in 1913. His parents were Abe and Mary (Conway) Bonnell. He served in the Canadian Army. He served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland, Italy, and Germany from 1941 to 1945. He received eight medals and returned home to Mulgrave. He and his wife raised three daughters and three sons. Submitted by Cambrai Branch #037. BOURQUE, John Peter WWII John was born in Sluice Point, Yarmouth County, NS on December 8, 1909. He served with the West Nova Scotia Regiment from 1940-45 in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Italy. He was discharged on September 22, 1944. He was awarded the 1939-43 Star, the Italy Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Medal of Remembrance – Liberation of Holland. John passed away on April 24, 2005. Submitted by Yarmouth Branch #061. BOUTILIER (HOLT), Isabel L. WWII Isabel was born on December 31, 1926 in Port Morien, NS. She was the daughter of George H. Boutilier and Maude E. (MacLeod) Boutilier. She was a corporal and was part of the Bombing and Gunnery School and No. 6 Repair Depot. She married William Holt. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. BOUTILIER (YOUNG), Kathleen WWII Kathleen was born in Swindon, England on April 27, 1921, the daughter of Daniel and Florence Young. Private Boutilier served as an orderly and first class cook in the Auxiliary Territorial Service which became the Women’s Royal Army Corps. She was stationed in England from September 16, 1939 to 1945. She married Howard (Buddy) Boutilier and currently resides in Donkin. She is an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary Branch #005. Submitted by Donkin Branch #005. BOUTILIER, Charles "Boots" WWII Boots joined the military at the outbreak of World War II and joined up with the 1st Anti-Aircraft Sqn. Due to injuries, he was discharged. www.ns.legion.ca 23 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion BOUTILIER, Chester Carlyle WWII Carlyle was the son of Louis and Lillian (Murphy) Boutilier. He was born on November 9, 1917. He served in the RCAF in the supply trade in Montreal, Camp Borden, and Angus, Ontario, enlisting in 1942 and attaining the rank of sergeant. During the war, he was a guard in Montreal. He was discharged in 1945. He later re-entered the RCAF after the war and served until 1968. Carlyle passed away on February 15, 1990 in Angus, Ontario. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. BOUTILIER, George Elmer WWII George was born in Port Morien, NS on May 30, 1915, the son of Louis and Lillian (Murphy) Boutilier. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was discharged in 1946. He was a member of the Black Watch Regiment, which served in Holland, France and Germany. He took part in the liberation of Holland in 1945. Elmer received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He worked all of his life as a miner but he was known in the village as the unofficial barber. George passed away on December 23, 1995. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. BOUTILIER, Gilbert WWII Gilbert was born on July 30, 1922, the son of Louis and Lillian (Murphy) Boutilier. He served in the Navy from 1940 to 1945. He worked on a ship transporting the first troops to England. He served in Canada, Newfoundland, England, and Gaspe. He is married to Joyce Carabin and they live in Glace Bay, NS. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. BOUTILIER, Henry R. WWII Henry was born on December 1, 1908 in Big Glace Bay, NS. He was the son of James and Christy (MacQueen) Boutilier. He was a private in the Cape Breton Highlanders from 1940-1944, serving in Canada. After the war, he was a coal miner in Caledonia No. 20, until his retirement. He was married to Katherine Neilson. He served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War, from 1942 to 1945. Sergeant Boutilier was a member of the 1st Canadian Airborne Regiment and served overseas in France and England. He was the son of James and Christy (MacQueen) Boutilier. He was a private in the Royal Canadian Regiment and North Nova Scotia Regiment. He served from 1939-1945 in North Africa, Italy, and Sicily. He was wounded in Italy in 1940. Under intense fire, he found a church in which he hid, and was saved by the resident priest. John returned home and worked in No. 4 Caledonia mine until an accident in 1950, which forced his retirement. John passed away in October 1992. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. BOUTILIER, Louis Sandford "Sam" WWII Sam was born on July 25, 1913, son of Louis and Lillian (Murphy) Boutilier. He was a member of the Merchant Navy from 1941 to 1942. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served overseas as a signalman with the Royal Canadian Corps Signals serving in Italy, Holland and France. He was awarded several medals: the France and Germany Star, the Itlay Star and the Holland Medal. After the war, he became a fisherman and worked on the lake boats. He married Beatrice McEnery. BOUTILIER, Wellington Edward "Duke" WWII Duke was born in Glace Bay, NS on December 22, 1901, the son of James and Christine Boutilier. The family resided in Port Morien for several years. Duke was a Gunner and served in the Artillery from 1942 to 1945, stationed in England. He received several war medals. He returned to Port Caledonia in 1945 and worked in the mines until his retirement. Duke was married to Stella MacLeod, who died in 1936, and later Ivy Walker from England. Duke passed away in September 1988. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. BOWDEN, Wilfred B. WWII Wilfred was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1924. At age 18, he joined the Army in 1942. He was sent to Orilla for Basics, then to Camp Borden for advanced training. He was sent to Halifax and put on a ship, Andes, and put out in the Basin. He served with the Duke of York Royal Canadian Hussars 7th Division from 1942 to 1945. He toured England, France, Holland and Germany until the end of the War. He came home to Canada on QEII, went to Westmount Montreal, then back to Toronto. He was a gunner and driver of a Bren gun. In 1977 he moved to Halifax. Submitted by Calais Branch #162. BOYLES, Benjamin WWII Benny was born in Boyles Point, NS, and currently resides there. Benny served with the 1st Canadian Assault Troop, The Ontario Tank Regiment, and The Canadian Army Tank Brigade from 1941 to 1945. Benny saw duty in Italy, Africa, Belgium and Germany. He served in Canada, United Kingdom and Continenal Europe. He received the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Clasp, 1939-1945 Star, France & Germany Star and Liberation of Holland. he was discharged from active duty on February 15, 1946 and returned to Mulgrave. Submitted by Cambrai Branch #037. BROWN, Alpheus Franklyn WWII Alpheus was born at Upper Port La Tour, NS on February 2, 1922.. He enlisted at Halifax, N.S. in 1940 with the Princess Louise Fusiliers and served overseas with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He served in England and France and was taken prisoner at the Falasis Gap in 1944. He was later released by the Free French Underground. He lived in North Sydney, N.S. after the war, until his death on April 21, 1987. Submitted by Cape Sable Branch #148. BROWN, Donald K. WWII Donald was born in Bear River, NS. He joined the Army in 1941 and was sent to Scotland with the Forestry Corp. He joined the RCOC in 1943, and in 1944 he was sent to France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He returned to Canada in 1945 as was released in 1946. Submitted by Bear River Branch #022. BROWN, Donald R. WWII Don was born at Bear River, N.S. in 1923. He joined the Canadian Army Forestry Corps in 1941, and transferred to the Ordinance Corps in 1943, serving in France, Belgium, Germany and Holland. He returned home in 1945, and joined the U.S.A.F. from 1950 to 1954. Don is now residing at the V.A.C. unit in Middleton, and is a sixty-year member of Bear River Branch #022 of The Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted by Bear River Branch #022. BROWN, Walter Earl WWII Earl served with the Halifax Rifles, and was transferred to the Service Corp, Embarkment Unit from 1942-47. He joined the Army as a mechanic in the spring of 1942 and was discharged in 1946. Private Burke served overseas in Italy and Holland. While in Italy, he met his brother, Private Gerald Burke, and wrote a letter home telling their parents of the meeting. Christian passed away on January 31, 1979. He enlisted in the Army on July 21, 1941 and attained the rank of private. He worked as a craftsman, mechanic, and pipefitter until his discharge in 1945. He served in Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and England. He received the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star and the Holland Medal. He married Evelyn (Norris) Burke. He was the son of Lawrence and Alice (Nearing) Burke. He was a private in the army. James served in Canada and Aldershot, N.S. He was married to Frances MacDonald. She died in 1972, and he later married Violet Ashe. He was a past president of Branch #055 of The Royal Canadian Legion, Port Morien. Jimmy passed away on May 12, 1993 at the age of 73. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. BURKE, John WWII John was born in Truro in 1926. He lied about his age and enlisted in October 1941 at the age of 15. When D-Day rolled around in June, 1944, Burke was in the thick of things and was among the first Canadians to make it ashore in Normandy. John served overseas with the Canadian Infantry until 1945. He still resides in Truro and presently serves as the Service Officer at Colchester, N.S. Branch #026. Submitted by Colchester Branch #026. BURKE, Phillip KOREA Phillip was born in August 1932 in Halifax, N.S. he enlisted in the army in January 1950, and was attached to the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and left for Korea in November 1950. He was involved in the battle at Kapyoung River at hill #677 in April 1951, where his unit was awarded the “Presidential Citation” from then-President of the U.S., President Harry S. Truman. He left Korea in 1952, but remained with the Canadian Forces until his retirement in 1975. He is a 50-year member of the Legion. Submitted by Fairview Branch #142. BUTLER, Joseph "Fizz" KOREA Joseph was born in Halifax on May 17, 1929. He joined the Nelson Sea Cadet Corps at age 14 and stayed there for 5 years. He became the company Gunnery Instructor (GI). At age 19, he joined the R.C.N. and stayed there for 25 years. In that time, he sailed many ships. He also went to the Korea War Zone. He retired as Chief Petty Officer C2FC. BUTTS, Ronald Freeman "Ronnie" WWII Ronnie was born in Port Morien, NS on June 13, 1923, the son of Joseph and Marion (Fraze) Butts. He served as a private in the North Nova Scotia Highlanders from January 26, 1943 until May 11, 1946, in Italy, France, and England. Among his medals were the France and Germany Star, the Italy Star, the Holland Medal, and the Normandy Medal. He landed on the beach in Normandy on D-Day, and was wounded a few days later. He enlisted on June 5, 1939 with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was posted to #10 Squadron, Gander, NL in August 1941. In 1942, he served at #10 Squadron at Dartmouth, NS. He would later return to Gander, remaining there until April 1944. The squadron was disbanded at Torbay, NL on August 15, 1945. His tour of duty included Canada, Newfoundland and the Atlantic. He enlisted in the R.C.I.C. on June 4, 1940 with the West Nova Scotia Regiment 3rd Brigade. He joined the Pictou Highlanders in 1940. Max arrived in the United Kingdom in May 1942. He disembarked Sicily on November 8, 1943 He was promoted to Lance Corporal on December 6, 1944. He was killed in action on December 16, 1944 at age 25. He is buried at Coriano Ridge War Cemetery in Italy, Lot X-A-6. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and War Medal. CHIASSON, Daniel "Danny" KOREA Danny was born in New Waterford, NS and in 1946, when his father returned from the war, the family moved to Cheticamp, NS. In 1953, he enrolled in the Canadian Army. He served in Korea from 1953 to 1954, Debert, NS, Camp Gagetown, Indo China, North and South Vietnam and in Cambodia as a mail clerk and courier. He served in West Germany from 1967 to 1970, and saw service in Mileau, France as a translator for the British Forces undergoing training in preparation for Belfast, Ireland. He also saw service with 5ROALC Valcartier, Quebec and with the Airborne from 1976 to 1980 and later became the Chief Instructor at the French School in Gagetown from where he retired. CHRISTISON, James WWII Jim was born in Pictou Landing, NS in 1923 and has resided in Trenton since 1965. Jim served with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve from 1941 to 1945 on the British Destroyer HMS Vanquisher, The HMCS Baddeck, Sault St-Marie and the Ottawa. Jim saw active duty in the Mediterranean, North Africa, the Pacific and the North Atlantic. He served in England, the Middle East, West Africa, South Africa, Egypt, Cyria and Port Maricious. Cecil joined the Royal Canadian Navy on August 3rd, 1942. He served in Sydney, Halifax, Newfoundland, Liverpool, Great Yarmouth, Buckson and Belgium. He was discharged on August 24th, 1945. Cecil passed away on October 24, 1990. Submitted by Donkin Branch #005. CLARKE, Norman Augustus WWII Norman was born in Dominion No. 6 (now called Donkin) on June 1, 1916. At age 17, he began work in the coal mines. He enlisted with the armed forces in 1942 at Yarmouth, NS. He served with the Novies and was stationed in Aldershot, NS and British Columbia before going overseas in 1943. He was stationed in the United Kingdom and returned to Canada in the fall of 1944. He was stationed in Sydney, NS in the medical corp and with Dr. H. Sutherland from fall of 1944 to December 1945. He was discharged to civilian life on December 14, 1945. He earned the Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp. He served in the Merchant Marine between 1940 and 1945, then switched to the Navy and served on the HMCS Hamilton. He served in Newfoundland and Halifax during the war. He entered the Army in 1950 and in 1951 was part of the Carlton-York Regiment in New Brunswick, where he served as a cook. He was married to Annie MacNeil from New Aberdeen, NS. CLEMENTS, Percy Eldon “Hank” WWII Hank was born in Port Morien, NS on November 28, 1917, the son of Charles and Ellen (White) Clements. He served both in the Merchant Marine and in theArmy. He served for a brief time in the Merchant Marine as a fireman aboard the SS Corabelle in 1939. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942 and served until 1945. He was a sapper in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He served in England and the Virgin Islands while in the Merchant Marine, and in Halifax and Newfoundland with the Army. Three brothers and his father also served on the SS Corabelle. He is married to Kathleen Budge. After the war, he worked at construction. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #055. COCHRANE, Bernard Charles “Bernie” WWII Bernie was born in Port Morien, NS on January 16, 1915, the son of Michael and Mary Agnes (Doyle) Cochrane. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on December 29, 1943. Corporal Cochrane was a member of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders until his discharge on May 10, 1946. He served in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. Among his medals were the France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and War Medal (1939-1945). He was married to Eunice Timmons of Port Morien. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #055, Port Morien, and served as its bartender until his death. Bernie passed away on July 19, 1962 and is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Black Brook, Port Morien. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. COCHRANE, Francis Edison WWII Francis was born on August 13, 1916, the son of Michael and Mary Agnes (Doyle) Cochrane. He served with the Royal Canadian Army in Africa and Italy. He held the Italy Star. Francis married Martha Gallant from Little Lorraine. Francis passed away on September 24, 1971 and is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Black Brook, Port Morien.
