He joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in 1942 and served on the Corvette Kamloops escorting convoys across the North Atlantic, later on the minesweeper Sarnia until the end of the war. Leo and his family have resided in Port Hawkesbury for the past 35 years. He is a Life member of Branch #043. Submitted by Pork Hawkesbury Branch #043. McINTOSH, W. Burke WWII Burke was born in Sydney, N.S. in 1921 and spent time in Glace bay, out on the Mira and back to Sydney. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Aircrew in 1941 and mustered out in 1945. He flew with the Halifax Bombers as an Air Gunner for 31 trips over enemy territory and was shot down in February 1945. Burke spent two-and-a-half years as a prisoner of war in Germany. He has been a member of Branch #012 of The Royal Canadian Legion for over 32 years. Submitted by Sydney Branch #012. McLAUGHLIN, Charles Leander WWII Charles was born on November 9, 1908 in Stellarton, NS. He enlisted on April 12, 1943 at Halifax, NS. He served with the Pictou Highlanders and the West Nova Scotia Regiment. His tour of duty included Canada, United Kingdom and Italy. Charles was killed in action on May 23, 1944 at age 35. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp, and War Medal. He is buried at Cassino Cemetery, Cassino, Italy, Lot IV-A-20. John is a member of the Kingston Legion Branch #098. Submitted by Kingston Branch #098. McLEOD, Josiah WWI Josiah was born in Boston, Mass., U.S.A. He fought with the #13 Platoon, 106th Overseas Battalion, C.E.F. in France. He was injured by mustard gas at Vimy Ridge in 1917. Josh passed away in 1966. Submitted by Kings Branch #006.
