She served in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. from 1942 to 1945. She served in Halifax and Aldershot and a short time in England with the Army Headquarters as a Clerk Typist. She attained the rank of corporal. She was discharged at Halifax in 1945 after three and a half years. She has been a member of Cape Sable Branch #148 for 25 years. Submitted by Cape Sable Branch #148. NICKERSON, Philip Ralph WWII Philip was born June 21, 1911. He served as Able Seaman in the Canadian Merchant Navy. Philip had the experience of being torpedoed on the SS. Oakton during a trip to Newfoundland. During the attack Phillip was below deck. When he came above deck, he could see the periscope of a German Submarine. he quickly ran to a life boat. All were rescued and brought to the port of Halifax, N.S. he then signed up a a crew member of the S.S. Cedarton. Submitted by Middleton Branch #001. OLAND, Bruce S. C. WWII Bruce was born on March 31, 1918 in Guildford, England to Colonel Sidney C. and Herlind (deBedia) Oland. He joined #245 Cadet Corps (King’s) from 1928-32. He enrolled in Officer’s Training Course in Beaumont, England. He enlisted in the Canadian Army, Non-Permanent Active (Militia) in 1937. In 1951, he was transferred to the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, HMCS Scotian. On November 15, 1967, he was promoted to Commodore. On February 9, 1971, was transferred to Supplementary List. Throughout World War II, Commodore Oland served in the Royal Canadian Artillery, 1st (Halifax) Coast Regiment, assuming a commission in 1939 and promoted to Captain in 1941. During his years in the Naval Reserve, he served as Commanding Officer of HMCS Scotian, Senior Naval Reserve Advisor to the Director General Reserves and Naval Reserve Adviser to the Commander, Maritime Command. He was awarded the Canadian Efficiency Decoration and Canadian Forces Decoration. He also served as Aide-de-Camp to Governor General Roland Michener. Bruce currently resides in Halifax, NS. OLAND, Don James WWII Don was born on February 18, 1922 in Havana, Cuba to Colonel Sidney C. and Herlinda (deBedia) Oland. He enlisted in the Canadian Army (Active) in 1943, and retired with the rank of Lieutenant on January 25, 1946. In World War II, Lieutenant Oland was a Canloan Officer and served in Britain and Northwest Europe with the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Warwichshire Regiment, which fought alongside the British 2nd Army. He was wounded three times during this war, and on the third time, on April 16, 1945, while leading his platoon during the Battalion’s attack on Binkum on the outskirts of Bremen, the wound resulted in the loss of a leg. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and War Medal 1939-45. Don passed away on January 27, 1986 in Halifax, NS. OLAND, J. Eric W. WWI WWII Eric was born on February 27, 1895 in Dartmouth, NS to parents W.C. and Ella Young (Bauld) Oland. He enrolled in the Royal Naval College in Halifax in January 1911. In May 1917, he was appointed Acting Lieutenant. In July 1925, he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, retiring in April 1939 with the rank of Captain. On August 28, 1939, he was recalled to active service, and on October 14, 1944, he retired with the rank of Captain. Captain Oland served on several ships in several theatres in World War I, and during World War II, he was Naval Officer-in-Charge at Saint John, NB and Montreal, PQ. At various times, he was Staff of Royal Naval College, Director of Naval Reserves at Naval Headquarters and on loan to the RCMP Marine Section. He was the first Canadian Naval Officer awarded the DSC in the First World War “for distinguished service in destroyers during the war.” Eric passed away on November 9, 1948 in Victoria, British Columbia.
