He joined the army in February 1942 and saw action in the Mediterranean Area, Sicily, Ortona, Belgium and Holland. He was discharged in January 1946. Gordon is a 43-year member of the Legion. Submitted by Fairview Branch #142. PURDY (GOODMAN), Ethel Elaine WWII Ethel was born in Bear River, NS. She served in the Canadian Army Dental Corp. Submitted by Bear River Branch #022. PYNE, Alexander Fraser WWII Alexander was born in Homeville, NS on January 24, 1921, the son of William Austen and Flora Margaret (Hodge) Pyne. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on July 21, 1943, and served in the No. 6 District Depot. He was a private and served in Holland, France and Germany. He was discharged on June 26, 1946. After the war, he worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was married to Barbara Smith from Mira. Alexander passed away in 1990. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. PYNE, Chester M. WWII Chester was born on August 29, 1919 in Homeville, NS. He was the son of William Austen and Flora Margaret (Hodge) Pyne. He was a lance corporal of the 4th Armour Division, No. 6 District Depot, Canadian Army. He enlisted on September 2, 1941 and was discharged on April 3, 1946. During this time, he served in England, France, Belgium, Germany, Normandy, and Holland. He worked as a medic. He was awarded the France and Germany Star and the Holland Medal. Chester was a miner and then a steelworker. He worked at the Sydney Steel Plant. He was married to Helen Joyce MacKinnon from Donkin. Chester passed away on March 2, 2005. WWII Fred was born in Halifax, N.S. in 1926 and after being in the Service, lived in British Columbia for ten years and then moved back to N.S., finally taking up residence in Mahone Bay, N.S. Fred joined the Canadian Army Artillery in 1944 and later transferred to the West Novies, returning to civilian life in 1946. Fred has been a member of Branch #049, Mahone Bay Legion for the last ten years. Submitted by Mahone Bay Branch #049.
