www.ns.legion.ca 127 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion SAULNIER, Gilfred WWII Gilfred served with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment in Italy, France, Germany, Holland and Belgium during World War II. He lives in West Pubnico. Submitted by West Pubnico Branch #066. SCOTT, J.B. WWII, KOREA J. B. Scott joined the Royal Canadian Navy on January 15, 1940, and served until September 1968. He served in the North Atlantic on Convoy Duties and in Korea. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #153, White’s Lake. Submitted by Atlantic Branch #153. SHANKS, Burton Harry WWII Burton was born in August 1923. He joined the Canadian Army in 1939. He was stationed at Halifax with the Halifax Rifles. He transferred to the Cape Breton Highlanders and was immediately shipped overseas. He served in France and Italy during the liberation. Burton was wounded in Italy during the last days of the war and was sent home to Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax in 1945. He was a member of the Wolfville Legion until his death in 1985. Submitted by Lumsden Branch #074. SHEA, Gerald Charles “Gerry” WWII Gerry was born on March 5, 1918, the son of William and Aztasia (Hawley) Shea. He enlisted to serve in the Spanish Civil War in 1936 under the name “Gerry Moore.” One of only 292 Canadian Volunteers in the Spanish government forces, he was a machine gunner with the MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion in the International Brigade. He enlisted in the navy on October 31, 1939 and served on the SS Sire. He transferred from the SS Sire to the SS Protecteur on September 26, 1941. The SS Sire was torpedoed and sank shortly after, in February 1941. He served in Halifax, American ports, the Suez Canal, and South Africa. He received the 1939-45 Star, Medal and Clasp. He married Alice Collins and worked in the Sydney Steel Plant for 38 years after the war. He was also a commanding officer in the Glace Bay Sea Cadets. Gerry passed away at the age of 70, and is buried in Forest Haven Cemetery. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #55. SHEEHY, Gerald E. WWII Gerry was born at Noel, NS on June 24, 1924. He enlisted in the RCAF in December, 1942 and trained to become a navigator. He went to England in 1943 flying in Wellington and Halifax aircraft, returning to Canada in 1946. Gerry now lives in Middleton, N.S. He was an MLA and Cabinet Minister in the Nova Scotia Government and is a 22-year member of Middleton Branch #001. Submitted by Middleton Branch #001.
