He was trained and worked with the artillery unit as a gunner on McNabe’s Island approximately two years on harbour defense. He was dispatched to Windsor, Aldershot, and various other locations for further training, then left Halifax Harbour for Europe in 1944 as reinforcements. He served with the North Nova Scotia Regiment, and as a machine gunner for the Algonquin Regiment for the remainder of the war. His tour of duty included France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He returned to Canada in 1946. Submitted by Atlantic Branch #153. SMELTZER, Phillip J. WWII Phillip was born in Mahone Bay, NS in 1918, and lived his whole life in the area, other than the time he spent in the war. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in 1939 and was not accepted because of being color-blind. In November 1939, he joined the Merchant Navy and delivered war supplies all over the world until 1943. After May 1943, he went back into the Royal Canadian Army as a Sergeant Instructor in both Yarmouth and Debert, NS, until the end of the war. Phillip joined Branch #049 Mahone Bay Legion in 1945 and still remains a member, receiving his 60-year Branch Service pin in 2005. Submitted by Mahone Bay Branch #049. SMITH, Charles E. WWII Charles was born on November 27, 1920 in Wentworth, Hants County, NS. He served with the Canadian Irish Regiment. Charles passed away on March 28, 1991. Submitted by Hants County Branch #009. SMITH, Charles Henry BOER, WWI Charles was born on May 17, 1875 in England. He was a Home Child that England sent to Canada. He served with the 68th Regiment for seven years, and the 14th Kings County Hussars (KCHUS) for four years. He also served with the 6th Mounted Rifles. Charles also had at least thirteen grandsons and one granddaughter who enlisted in the Armed Forces during wartime. He passed away on May 7, 1952, and is buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Windsor, Hants County, NS. Submitted by Hants County Branch #009. SMITH, Frank E. WWII Frank was born in Port Morien, NS in 1922, the son of Gordon and Margaret (Ferguson) Smith. During the Second World War, he served as staff stenographer at Intelligence Corps Headquarters, Atlantic Command, and also served overseas. Following the war, he and his wife, Patricia, resided in London, England. Frank passed away on June 7, 1988, and is buried in London, England. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055.
