He was the son of James and Martha (Curry) Thomas. During WWII, he joined the Merchant Marines, and worked as a fireman from 1942 to 1945. He was married to Hennerita Kendall. He was a fisherman most of his life. John passed away on April 8, 1994 and is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Port Morien. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. THOMAS, Joseph Stephen WWII Joseph was born on March 7, 1918 in Port Morien, NS, the son of James and Martha (Curry) Thomas. He was a seaman in the Merchant Navy during WWII, working as a stationary engineer. He sailed on the Panchito, the SS Rockwood Park and the Rose Castle. He married Elizabeth (Fortune) Thomas. After the war, he worked in the coal industry. He was a member of Branch #055, The Royal Canadian Legion, Port Morien. Joseph passed away on April 17, 1995, and is buried in Forrest Haven Memorial Gardens. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. THOMAS, Vincent WWII Vincent was born on April 27, 1920 in Port Morien, NS, the son of James and Martha (Curry) Thomas. He served with the Merchant Marines from 1939 to 1945. Places of service include South America, Suez Canal, Egypt, Argentina, and Cape Town, South Africa. Vincent fought in the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest single battle of the Second World War. His ship, the S.S. Sussack, was torpedoed in the Indian Ocean in 1943. Vincent married Gertrude Cochrane. He resides in Long Beach. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. THOMPSON, Gordon G. WWII Gordon was born in Springton, PEI on October 15, 1924. He joined the Armed Forces in Halifax and served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe from 1944-1946. He and his wife Laura are retired in Port Hawkesbury. He is a member of Branch #043. Submitted by Port Hawkesbury Branch #043. TIMMONS, Eric Thomas WWII Eric was born on May 8, 1921 in Port Morien, NS, the son of Alfred and Bessie (MacLean) Timmons. He served in the Royal Canadian Army from May 1941 to November 17, 1942 at Petawawa, Ontario and Halifax, NS. He married Shirley Drinkwater from Glace Bay. Eric passed away on November 16, 1986 and is buried in Sanfield, Cape Breton, NS. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055.
