He enlisted in the army in September 1942 and served in England, Africa, and the South and North Atlantic. He was discharged in 1945. Among his medals was the special Africa Star, which he received for his service on that continent. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. TUTTY, Joseph “Joe” WWII Joe was born on September 5, 1918, the son of Charles and Mary (Campbell) Tutty. Private Tutty served in WWII with the Calgary Horse in Belgium and Holland. For his participation in the liberation of Holland, he received the Holland Medal. He married Winnie Burns, of New Waterford, NS. Joe passed away in October 1987 and is buried at Mira Gut Baptist Cemetery. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. TUTTY, Lincoln Andrew WWII Lincoln was born on October 12, 1912 in Mira, NS, the son of Charles and Mary (Campbell). He enlisted in the army on August 29, 1939 and was discharged in 1945. For medical reasons, he remained in Canada. He became one of the first recruiting officers in Cape Breton. Later, he worked at installing electronics in gun batteries in South Bar. He was married to Christine Campbell of North Sydney. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. TUTTY (STRASBOURG), Verna WWII Verna was born in Mira, NS on July 24, 1921, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Campbell) Tutty. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943 in the women’s division and worked in communications in Ottawa and Rockcliffe. Verna is buried in Prince George, British Columbia. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. TUTTY, Willard WWII Willard was born on May 27, 1915, the son of Charles and Mary (Campbell) Tutty. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1940 and worked as a stoker. In December 1940, he was serving on the destroyer Saguenay when it was torpedoed as it protected a convoy 300 miles west of Ireland. Twenty-one sailors were killed. Willard was severely injured and taken to a Halifax Hospital. Willard passed away in 1942 at the age of 27. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055.
