He served with the Canadian Provost Corp. (Military Police). He served in Central Europe, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, England, Central Mediterranean area, and Italy. He was awarded the Central Europe Star (1939-45), Italy Star, France-Germany Star, Defence Medal, and the Canadian Voluntary Service Medal and Clasp. He was discharged from the Army in 1946. Submitted by Donkin Branch #005. BUCKLER, Donald K. WWII Donald was born in Bear River, NS. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and was sent overseas in 1943. In March, 1944, his Halifax Bomber was shot down over Stuttgart, Germany and he was a POW for the next 13 months. He was released from the service in 1945. Submitted by Bear River Branch #022. BUCKLER, Gerald A. WWII Gerald was born in Bear River, NS. He joined the Army in September 1942, and was a driver and Bren-gunner in the Royal Canadian Army Signal Corp. He served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, before returning home in 1946. Submitted by Bear River Branch #022. BURKE, Christian WWII Christian, son of Lawrence and Alice (Nearing) Burke, was born in Port Morien, NS on July 26, 1922. He joined the Army as a mechanic in the spring of 1942 and was discharged in 1946. Private Burke served overseas in Italy and Holland. While in Italy, he met his brother, Private Gerald Burke, and wrote a letter home telling their parents of the meeting. Christian passed away on January 31, 1979. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055. BURKE, Gerald P. "Gerry" WWII Gerry was born on January 17, 1917, the son of Lawrence and Alice (Nearing) Burke. He enlisted in the Army on July 21, 1941 and attained the rank of private. He worked as a craftsman, mechanic, and pipefitter until his discharge in 1945. He served in Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and England. He received the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star and the Holland Medal. He married Evelyn (Norris) Burke. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 60, Burlington, Ontario. Gerry passed away on December 24, 2002. Submitted by Port Morien Branch #055.
