www.ns.legion.ca 69 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion GREENCORN, Alexander J. WWII Alex was born in Antigonish in 1924 and grew up in Port Hawkesbury until the early thirties. He lived in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia until 1942, when he joined the Army on November 11. He was shipped overseas and landed at the Belgium-Holland border with the Essex Scottish Regiment and was a Bren-gunner until he was wounded. Returning to active duty, he drove a two-stretcher jeep until the end of the war. Placed with the Occupation Force, promoted to sergeant, Alex trained eight sergeants of the Dutch Netherlands Army on the 6-pounder Anti-Tank Gun. He was discharged on July 18, 1946, returning to Port Hawkesbury where he raised a family. Alex remains an active member of Branch #043. Submitted by Port Hawkesbury Branch #043. GREENWOOD, Malcolm WWII Malcolm was born in Shag Harbour, NS in 1919. He served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He returned home in 1946. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #148. Submitted by Cape Sable Branch #148. HAIGHT, Donald WWII Donald was born in Bear River, NS. He served the Motor Transport Division of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp from 1944-46. Submitted by Bear River Branch #022. HANSFORD, Cecil Hambley WWI WWII Cecil was born in February 1899 in Torbrook Mines, Annapolis County, NS. He served the Canadian Army during the First World War with the 40th Battalion in 1915. He served overseas from 1916-18 with the 25th Nova Scotia Battalion, 5th Brigade, 2nd Division in the United Kingdom, France, and Belgium. He was wounded twice. He held the rank of Corporal upon his discharge. During the Second World War, he served from 1940-45 in Aldershot, NS as Staff Sergeant. After the war, he was employed as a Gold Miner in Timmons, Ont., also with the Nova Scotia Provincial Police, and he was a barber in Wolfville for 35 years. He retired in 1963, and passed away in 1964. He was Past President of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #074, Dr. C.B. Lumsden, Wolfville, NS. Submitted by Lumsden Branch #074. HANSFORD, Gordon Richard WWII Gordon was born in September 1923 in Wolfville, NS to parents Cecil and Cora Hansford. He served the N.P.A.M. 2nd WNSR from 1940-41. During the Second World War, he served with the RCOC, RCEME from 1941-46, holding the rank of Craftsman upon his discharge. He served the Canadian Army Militia from 1947-64, holding the rank of Major upon his discharge. His theatres of war include the United Kingdom, C.M.F., and Northwest Europe. He served with the 1st Canadian Infantry Division, 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade, and the 5th Canadian Armoured Troops Workshop. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration.
