www.ns.legion.ca 71 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion HAWKINS, Franklin A. WWII Frank was born at Charlottetown, PEI in 1919. He joined the Army with the Pictou Highlanders in September 1939. He served in the UK, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland, returning home in December 1945 and remained in the forces until November 1946. He then joined the Militia for a further 26 years. Frank now lives in Wilmot, NS and is a 60-year member of Middleton Branch #001. Submitted by Middleton Branch #001. HAYES, John Newman WWII John was born in Coldbrook, NS and lives there to this day. He served in Europe with the R.C.O.C. from 1941-1944. He is a Life Member with 37 years of Legion service. Submitted by Kings Branch #006. HENDERSON, Alcon Roy WWII Roy was born in1926 and joined the Canadian Navy in 1943. He was posted to HMCS CATARQUI; HMCS CORNWALLIS; HMCS PEREGUINE; M.S. NICOLE; and HMCS ONTARIO. He served overseas returning in 1946 at the end of the war. Roy is retired and living in Truro, Nova Scotia and a 46-year member of the Legion. Submitted by Colchester Branch #026. HENDERSON, Frank Milford WWII Frank was born in Wolfville, N.S. in 1915. He joined the Army in 1941 and served at various locations in Canada. He served with The North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He was a carpenter with the Canadian Army Corp. He moved to British Columbia in 1965, and remained there until his death in 1994. Submitted by Lumsden Branch #074. HILL, George Urquhart WWII George was born on October 29, 1918. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in September 1939. He served with 111 R.A.F. Fighter Command, North Africa in Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, and North Africa. He was one of the few recipients of the D.F.C. and two bars and he had shot down his first enemy plane during the Dieppe raid. Later, in North Africa, George led the famous “Treble One” squadron and piled up a score of fourteen victories. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Aircrew Europe Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal. George passed away in November 1969.
