This Booklet incorporates all the remaining biographies which were submitted for inclusion in Volume #1 of the series. Please note that if you have submitted a biography which is not printed in this issue, it will appear in our next issue. I would like to thank all the Branches who took the time and effort to research and submit the photographs and short biographies included in this 2nd edition in memory of our Veterans and their Comrades, however, there are still many more Branches, and their Veterans who could, and should, be recognized. www.ns.legion.ca 9 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion ALLEN, Thomas Earl WWII Thomas was born in September 1922 in Halifax. He served with the Princess Louise Fusiliers. His service includes N.P.A.M. in the 1930’s (PLF), United Kingdom, C.M.F; North West Europe in World War Two. He commanded a Mortar Platoon of the P.L.F. in 11th Infantry Brigade of the 5th Armoured Division. Later, in Germany, in the 1950’s, he commanded the Mortar Platoon of the 1st Highland Battalion, 27th Infantry Brigade. He was Staff Officer in Fredericton and Halifax, responsible for training cadets. He later served in London, Ontario and Petawawa with the Royal Canadian Regiment. In the 1960’s, he did two tours with the International Surpevisory Commission in Cambodia, Laos, and Viet Nam. He was head of the support staff of the West Nova Scotia Regiment in 1969. He trained in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. He left Halifax on December 14, 1941, and arrived in Liverpool, England on December 23, 1941. James served in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He returned to Halifax aboard Queen Elizabeth in November 1945, and was honourbly discharged on December 3, 1945 in Halifax. www.ns.legion.ca 21 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion BOUTIN, Germain “Gerry” Korea Gerry was born in St. Camill du Wolfe, Quebec in 1931. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in 1949, at the age of eighteen. He served with the 1st Battalion, Royal 22 Infantry Regiment, and saw action in Congo, Germany, Cyprus and Bonnie during the Korean conflict. He also trained as a paratrooper. After a month of training in Japan, he disembarked for Korea in 1951 with the 2nd Battalion, R22R. He served twelve months in Korea before returning to Canada. After three years with the R22r’s, he re-mustered to the Ordinance Corp, where in 1961, he served six months with the United Nations Peacekeeping operations in Belgian Congo. In 1965, Gerry was attached to the 2nd Battalion R22R and posted to Werl, Germany for two-and-a-half years. In 1973, he was attached to the 2nd Battalion PPCLI’s for duty on the Island of Cyprus for six months. He served one year aboard HMCS Bonaventure as PO Vitilier and retired in 1974. Gerry is a member of Centennial Branch #160, The Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted by Centennial Branch #160, The Royal Canadian Legion. BOWLBY, Carl M. WWII Carl was born in Margaretville, NS in 1921. He enlisted in the Canadian Army, West Nova Scotia Regiment in 1939 and served in the United Kingdom, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany and Holland. He returned to Canada in 1945 and now resides in Middleton. Carl is a forty-year member of Middleton Branch #001, The Royal Canadian Legion. On Christmas Day 1943, he went overseas with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He was wounded in action, returned home and discharged in August 1945. WWII Clyde was born in Yarmouth, NS in 1924 and lived his adult life in Bridgewater and Halifax areas before moving to Mahone Bay about twenty years ago. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a First Class Stoker from June 11, 1943 to October 5, 1945. He served in Newfoundland and joined the C3 Convoy duty from Newfoundland to Ireland. BRANNEN, Joseph W. WWII Joe was born on Cape Sable Island, NS in 1917. ‘Cape Island’ was home except for the war years, 1939-1945. He was a veteran of the World War Two, discharged as a Corporal at the end of hostilities. He was with the West Nova Scotia Regiment and served in the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean (Italy) and Continental Europe (Holland). He was a charter president of Branch 148, R.C.L., as well as a Life Member and recipient of the Meritorious Service Award. Joe was an active Legion member until shortly before his death in 2002. At the age of nineteen, he paid his own expenses and hitch-hiked to Halifax, NS to join the Royal Canadian Regiment 2nd Battalion and trained in Petawawa, Ontario, Fort Louis, Washington and Japan, before serving one year in Korea. He was honourably released in 1952 and resettled in Sydney, where he was employed at Sydney Steel. He is a Life Member and has actively served the Royal Canadian Legion for thirty-two years. Many IBEW members have heard the call to arms and laid down their tools to fight for freedom. The IBEW recognizes and remembers the veterans that served their Country so valiantly. WWII Allan was born in Dartmouth, NS in 1919. After being educated in Dartmouth, he traveled to Holland in 1949 for five years, returning in 1953 to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario for 27 years and then on to Toronto for six years. He returned to Mahone Bay upon retiring in 1990. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in June 1940 as a Student Pilot and left for England in 1943. After being there for a period of training, he was the posted to South East Asia, where he joined the 31st Squadron of the Royal Air Force and did a tour of operations until the war ended. He became an Instructor with the Royal Canadian Air Force until being discharged in May 1946. Allan joined Mahone Bay Branch #049, The Royal Canadian Legion in 1990 and has remained an active member. He served in the 6th Royal Hussars and the Lord Strathcona Horse, Armoured Regiments. He was a tank, gunner operator and served with the British 8th Army in Italy. He worked for the Dominion Coal Company in Florence, Cape Breton and was then transferred to Princess Collery in Sydney Mines, where he worked on the surface. Korea Victor was born on February 13, 1932 in Marie Joseph, Guysborough County, NS. He served the Army in Korea from 1952-1953, Northwest Europe from 1955-1957, and Cyprus. He was discharged with the rank of Warrant Officer. He was awarded the Korea Medal, KVSM, NATO, UN Korea, Peacekeeping, Cyprus CD and clasp. www.ns.legion.ca 43 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion DOYLE, John Edward WWI John was born on September 9, 1891 in Halifax, NS. He joined the Dalhousie Medical Unit C.A.M.C. in 1914. He went overseas with the 1st Division, attached to the 1st Field Ambulance. He was wounded twice and gassed. He received the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions at Cambrai. He was credited with saving many of his comrade’s lives while under heavy fire. Besides the DCM, he received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He returned to Canada in 1919, and in 1924, he joined the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission, then on to the Department of Venders, and retired as Purchasing Director in 1954. John passed away on August 5, 1966 at the Camp Hill Veterans Hospital. Submitted by Family. DUDKA, Bill WWII Bill was born on September 6, 1924 in Stellarton, NS. During World War Two, he was a lance-corporal with the Canadian Provost Corps attached to the North Nova Scotia Regiment (Highlanders). He saw action in Holland, France and England. We waded ashore at Juno Beach on D-Day and traveled to the frontier by motorcycle until VE Day. Bill was married to Eileen MacDonald and together, they had four children. He was a dominant factor in The Royal Canadian Legion, holding positions of Branch President, Zone Commander, Command President, and served on the Dominion Executive Council, receiving MSM and Palm Leaf. He was killed in action during the Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942 with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. Submitted by Arras Branch #059, The Royal Canadian Legion. DUNBAR, Roderick “Rod” Smith WWI Rod joined the Canadian Engineers, Nova Scotia Regiment as a Sapper on May 16, 1918 at Aldershot, NS. He trained at St. Jean, QC, and at Seaforth, England. DUNN, Harold WWII Harold was born in Saint John, NB, and lived his adult life in Kentville, NS. He served in the R.C.A.F. and saw service in South East Asia, and Indian Ocean Islands, from 1941 to 1945. Harold is a sixty-year member of Kings Branch #006, The Royal Canadian Legion.
