www.ns.legion.ca 137 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion ROGERS, Robert N. WWII Bob enlisted in the Navy in 1945. He married Gwendolyn Williams. He served on various ships, including H.M.C.S. Cape Scott. He retired with the rank of Chief Petty Officer 1st Class, after serving twenty-seven years. He continued to work for the Department of National Defense at Naval Armament Depot for an additional ten years. Submitted by Fairview Branch #142, The Royal Canadian Legion. ROLFE, Raymond WWII Raymond was born on June 4, 1924 in Sydney, NS. He joined the Canadian Army in May, 1943. He was sent to New Glasgow, NS for military training and then to Aldershot and Debert, NS in preparation for oversees duty. In the summer of 1943, he was sent to England. He then trained and prepared to depart for Ortona, Italy, where he took part in various battles. He was wounded in the Hitler Line on May 23, 1944, and sent to hospital in Italy. Ray returned to Canada in 1946. He worked at Sydney Steel for about twenty years and another four years at Point Edward Naval Base. He has been a member of Sydney Branch #012, The Royal Canadian Legion for over thirty-five years. Submitted by Sydney Branch #012, The Royal Canadian Legion. ROMYN, John Anna WWII John was born in Rotterdam in 1923. He served in the Dutch Navy, always overseas, from 1943 until 1947. He arrived in Canada in 1951 and resides in Truro. RUSSELL, William John WWI & WWII William was born on June 20, 1896 in Victoria, Newfoundland. He served the Royal Canadian Army with the 42nd Battalion Royal Highlanders of Canada in Canada and Europe. He was awarded the Distinguised Conduct Medal and the Military Medal and Bar. William passed away on September 3, 1968. Submitted by Family. RYAN, James C. WWII James enlisted in the Ordnance Corp. on June 1, 1942, and served with the North Nova Scotia First Regiment and the Cape Breton Highlanders. He was discharged on January 25, 1946. Following his service, he returned to his home in Mulgrave. James was married in Kentville, NS on July 11, 1942. He is a brother of Eric and Foster Ryan.
