www.ns.legion.ca 143 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion SHANKS, Ralph WWII Ralph was born on March 21, 1921, the son of Fred and Annie Shanks, in Three Mile Plains, Hants County, NS. He served with the Halifax Rifles overseas. Ralph passed away in 1982. Submitted by Hants County Branch #009, The Royal Canadian Legion. SHANNON, Belmont J. WWII Belmont was born on August 21, 1925 in New Brunswick. He joined the Canadian Army (Carlton 8 York Regiment) in December of 1941 and transferred to the Royal Canadian Corp. of Signals. He took advanced training in Kingston, Ontario and was drafted to England in April 1942. He was posted to 2nd Corp. of Signals, then reposted to L of C Signals in May 1944, then it was on to France on June 6, 1944. He served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He returned to Canada in 1946. Belmont is presently retired in Port Hawkesbury, where he is President of Port Hawkesbury Branch #043, The Royal Canadian Legion. He served the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp initially, then transferred to the R.A.F./R.C.A.F., 77th Fighter Interceptor Squadron R.A.F.; 428th Ghost Squadron, assigned Tiger Force in Bomber Command R.C.A.F. in 1945 for Pacific war, but hostilities ended before his training was completed. Harold served in Canada, Labrador and Britain. He was mentioned in dispatches for raids on Kiel Canal, submarine pens and the D-Day invasion. Harold is a twenty-three-year member of Vimy Branch #027, The Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted by Vimy Branch #027, The Royal Canadian Legion. SHEFFIELD, Ralph E. WWII Ralph was born in Glenmont, NS and lived his adult life in Centreville, NS. He served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps from 1942 to 1945, mostly in the Central Mediterranean. He was a sixteen-year member of Kings Branch #006, The Royal Canadian Legion at the time of his death in 1981. Submitted by Kings Branch #006, The Royal Canadian Legion. SILVER, Carl U. WWII Carl was born on April 15, 1915 in Upper Northfield, NS. He joined the Canadian Army, 88th Anti Aircraft Battery in 1940 and served in the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, and Holland, returning home in 1945. He is a fortyfive-year member of Bridgetown Branch #033, The Royal Canadian Legion. Carl now resides at the Middleton V.A.C. unit. Submitted by Middleton Branch #001, The Royal Canadian Legion.
