www.ns.legion.ca 147 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion SPEARS, John Charles “Spike” John was born on March 11, 1922, in Halifax, NS. He joined the Halifax Rifles on June 6, 1940, and underwent training in Halifax and then at Camp Borden, Ontario. He then sailed on the "Andes" from Aldershot in Halifax, landing in Liverpool, England in 1942. He was then transferred to the Sheerbroke Fusiliers (tank corps), as a Gunner Operator. He underwent further training in England and Glasgow, Scotland. It was then back to Worthey, England, and sailing in a severe storm landed in Ben Sur Mer, Normandy on June 6, 1944 and took part in the Invasion of Normandy. He and his fellow Canadians who made it, marched with the others through France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany. He returned to Canada in October 1945 and was released in November. He worked at Eaton's and then the local Steel Plant for over thirty-five years. Spike, a Life Member, joined The Royal Canadian Legion in 1945, and has been a member of Sydney Branch #012 for over sixty years, and was Past President at this time. Submitted by Sydney Branch #012, The Royal Canadian Legion. SPIDLE, Russell D. WWII Russell was born in Black River, Kings County, NS in 1922. He served with the West Nova Scotia Regiment overseas during the war. He was a prisoner of war for one year. He was a Life Member of Dr. C. B. Lumsden Branch #74 of The Royal Canadian Legion, and a Life Member of the West Nova Memory Club, and the Lions Club until his death. Submitted by Dr. C. D. Lumsden Branch #074, The Royal Canadian Legion. SPINNEY, James William “Bill” WWII Bill was born on April 29, 1917 in Stellarton, NS. He served the Royal Canadian Air Force in Canada, and the United Kingdom. He was killed on November 16, 1942, while serving on overseas air opertions with #101 R.A.F. Squadron. He was the pilot of a Lancaster aircraft W4326, which crashed at approximately 0400 hours. He is buried at Towyn Cemetery in England: Class 2, Row 6, Grave 288. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Defence Medal, C.V.S.M. and clasp and the War Medal. Submitted by Stellarton Branch #028, The Royal Canadian Legion. STEVENS, Alfred K. “Alie” WWII Alie was born and raised in Kentville, NS. He served from 1940 to 1946 with the West Nova Scotia Regiment. He was a member of Kings Branch #006, The Royal Canadian Legion for thirty-six years at the time of his death in 2005. Submitted by Kings Branch #006, The Royal Canadian Legion.
