www.ns.legion.ca 57 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion GOURLEY, Carl O. WWII Carl was born in Stewiacke, NS and lived most of his adult life in Kentville, NS. He served with the North Nova Scotia Regiment from 1939 to 1945. He served in France, was wounded and taken prisoner, spending over two years as a Prisoner of War. He was a Life Member and Past President of Kings Branch #006, The Royal Canadian Legion, with fifty-nine years of service at the time of his death in 2004. Submitted by Kings Branch #006, The Royal Canadian Legion. GRATTO, R. Earl “Duke” WWII Duke was born in September 1921 in New Glasgow, NS. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in March 1941, and received his Pilot’s Wings in December 1941. He was posted overseas and transferred to R.A.F. in Great Britain (Ireland Squadron #504). He was sent to North Africa in September 1942 to 33rd Squadron R.A.F. in support of British 8th Army. He returned to Britain in April 1944 to prepare for D-Day, receiving a new Spitfire IX with 33 Squadron, which was very active in Europe before and after D-Day. Duke returned to Canada in September 1944 and was posted to 126 Squadron in Dartmouth, NS. He retired in July 1945. GREENOUGH, George M. WWII George was born in 1918 and moved to Middleton, NS at the age of one. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941, serving as an aircraft technician in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and Holland. He returned home in 1945. GRIFFITH, Gordon Jackson “Griff” WWII Gordon was born in Saint John, NB in March of 1920. He joined the Merchant Marine in April of 1941 on M.V. Kaipaki in the Atlantic and Pacific, and along the Eastern Seaboard on the SS Fellowcraft. After the war, Gordon lived in Saint John, Chatham, Dartmouth and finally Port Hawkesbury. He was employed by B/A (Gulf) Oil Company for thirty-two years, and is currently retired in Port Hawkesbury with his wife of fifty-eight years. GRIMM, Roland Edward WWII Roland was born in Parkdale, Lunenburg County, NS in 1916. He served the Royal Canadian Army with RCASC, attached to No. 3 CDC in Italy, Campian, North West Europe.
