www.ns.legion.ca 69 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion HERGETT, Kenneth R. WWII Kenneth was born on May 10, 1919 in Windsor, NS. He served with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Engineers. Kenneth passed away on March 13, 1989. Submitted by Hants County Branch #009, The Royal Canadian Legion. HIGGINS, Percy ‘Dexter’ WWII Dexter was born on October 4, 1921 in Stellarton, NS. He joined the Pictou Highlanders in September 1939. He transferred to the North Nova Scotia Regiment and took his basic training in Amherst, NS. His theatres of war include Canada, United Kingdom, and North West Europe. He arrived in the United Kingdom on July 31, 1941, and was then sent to officers’ training school on April 4, 1944, completing the course on November 16, 1944, as Commisioned Lieutenant. He disembarked for France on March 16, 1945. Dexter was killed in action on April 15, 1945, at the age of twenty-three. He is buried at Holten Canadian War Cemetery in Holten, Holland: Lot I-H-5. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, France German Star, Defense Medal, C.V.S.M. and clasp, and the War Medal. Submitted by Stellarton Branch #028, The Royal Canadian Legion. HILTZ, Carl WWII Carl was born in Truro, NS and served in the military from 1940 to 1946. He played the bugle as a ‘boy soldier’ in 1931 with the 25th Battalion, playing the same horn his father blew during World War One. During World War Two, Carl played with the military band and became the regular bugler in 1942. He would also become an Infantry instructor and ended his military career as a Regimental Policeman. Carl still resides in Truro and is a member of Colchester Branch #026, The Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted by Colchester Branch #026, The Royal Canadian Legion. HIMMELMAN, J. Byron WWII J. Byron was born in 1922. He served in the Merchant Navy during World War Two. He belonged to Hants County Branch #009 of The Royal Canadian Legion. J. Byron passed away in 2003. Submitted by Hants County Branch #009, The Royal Canadian Legion. HINGLEY, Ernest William WWII Ernest was born on March 10, 1925 in Kemptown, NS, and moved to Truro in 1938. He joined the Army in 1941, left for overseas in October 1942, and returned home in September 1946. Ernie still resides in Truro and is a thirty-nine-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion.
