www.ns.legion.ca 79 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion JENKINS, Dr. William WWII Bill was born on October 17, 1916 in New York City. He gave up his American citizenship to 1942, when he joined the Canadian Army as a Private Soldier. He received his commission in the same year and volunteered to serve with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion in 1943. He served overseas from 1944 to June 1945. In civilian life, Bill was employed at the Nova Scotia Agriculture College, serving as principal from 1964 to 1972. He still resides in Truro and is a member of The Legion. Submitted by Colchester Branch #026, The Royal Canadian Legion. JOHNSON, William J. WWII William was born on March 30, 1922 in Glen Haven, Halifax County, NS. He served the Army in France and Germany. He was discharged with the rank of Corporal. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star – Italy, France, Germany, MD Britain, Victory Medal, UNEF Medal, and Peacekeeping Medal. Submitted by Calais Branch #162, The Royal Canadian Legion. JOHNSTON, Percy Andrew Clifford WWII Percy was born in 1910. He served the Royal Canadian Army as a cook on a Fairmile during convoy duty on the high seas. Percy passed away in 1995. Submitted by Bear River Branch #022, The Royal Canadian Legion. JONES, W. A. “Wally” WWII Wally was born in Caron, Saskatchewan in 1919. His family eventually settled in Regina, where Wally finished his schooling and joined the Regina Rifles 2nd Battalion. In 1941, at twenty-two years of age, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. As an AC2, he trained a Wireless Operator Air Gunner and was soon attached to the RAF Coastal Command #172 Squadron. Throughout his years with the RAF, Wally served in the Leighlite Wellington airplanes at several postings. His last posting was in Gilraltor. He finished his tour of duty in 1944 as Flight Lieutenant with the #179 RAF Squadron. Wally received the following medals during his service: 3945 Star, Atlantic Star, the Aircrew Europe Clasp, Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the War Medal, and the Tour of Operation Wings. Wally was also awarded a very special medal, the M.I.D., which is awarded for conduct beyond the call of duty. Wally was discharged from the service in 1945. His civilian career took him to Nova Scotia in 1972. He retired in 1981. He and his wife, Evelyn, chose to remain in Nova Scotia. He retired from this second career in 1981. Wally’s dedication to the Service, The Legion, Veterans, seniors and the community is his way of life, even now at eighty-six years of age. Submitted by Centennial Branch #160, The Royal Canadian Legion. JORDAN, Alfred G. E. “Al” Korea Al was born in Mount Dennis, Ontario and now lives in Kentville, NS. He served in Korea with the 3 R.C.H.A. as a gunner, and with 1 R.C.H.A. (Shilo Man), and the 128 AA Battery (Picton, Ontario). He served twenty-seven years in total, including twenty-one years with the West Novies.
