www.ns.legion.ca 135 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion PRYOR, Harry Roger WWII Harry was born in Manchester, England in 1918 and came to Nova Scotia in 1927. He joined the Army on September 4, 1939, and was a member of the Pictou Highlanders out of Stellarton until he asked for a transfer so he could go overseas. In January 1940, he joined men in the West Novas as a Bren gun carrier and headed to England to begin his European tour and string of battles a short time later. Harry served in England, Sicily, Italy and Northwest Europe and was released from the military in 1946. He was a 50-year Life Member and Past President of Colchester Branch #026, The Royal Canadian Legion before he passed away in 2001. Submitted by Colchester Branch #026, The Royal Canadian Legion. PRYOR, Leonard Harry WWII Leonard was born in Manchester, England in 1915 and came to Nova Scotia in 1927. He was a son or Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pryor of Pictou Road, Bible Hill, Nova Scotia. He worked as a Plumber before enlisting in the Military in 1942. Len was with the 5th Armoured Brigade and served in Italy and North West Europe. After the war, he returned home and opened Pryor’s Open Kitchen Restaurant on Walker Street in Truro, Nova Scotia. An avid horseman, Len passed away on May 20, 1991. PRYOR, Richard Charles “Dick” WWII Richard, also known as Dick, was born in Manchester, England in 1922 and came to Nova Scotia in 1927. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pryor of Pictou Road, Bible Hill, Nova Scotia. Dick went to England in 1938 as a Boy Seaman, returning to Nova Scotia in 1940. At the age of eighteen, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Leading Seaman. Dick was a crewmember of H.M.C.S. Huron, which grounded and sank one German destroyer and sank at least two armed trawlers in several engagements with enemy craft while trying to intercept the Allied Fleet headed for the invasion of Normandy. He was also on the Murmansk Run between England and Russia. Dick retired to Scotland with his Scottish wife in 1949 and passed away in 1970. Butler Branch #044, The Royal Canadian Legion. PURDY, Gordon WWII Gordon served with the Highland Infantry of Canada, R.C.I.C. as Lance Corporal during WWII. He was killed in action on July 8, 1944 at the age of 21 years and is buried at the Beny-Sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery, France (Grave reference: XV.A.7.).
