www.ns.legion.ca 153 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion SMYTH, Howard Ray WWII Howard was born in Bury, Quebec on November 6, 1918, and joined the military in June 1940. Gunner Smyth was with the 3rd Anti-Tank Regiment and drove an M-10 tank in the Normandy Invasion in France on June 6, 1944. He was wounded in Beny-sur--Mer, France on June 12, 1944. Howard returned to Canada on the Isle de France in August 1945. He married Ethel Mayotta Dougherty in 1946 and they had four children. After the war, Howard was a dairy farmer in Quebec and moved to Nova Scotia in 1976. He is a member of Colchester Branch #026, The Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted by Colchester Branch #026, The Royal Canadian Legion. SNYDER, Carl James “Duke” PEACETIME Duke was born in Sheet Harbour, NS on September 26, 1945. He served twenty-seven years as Military Police, with eight postings in Canada, and one posting in Lahr, Germany. He received the Canadian Decoration and Clasp, and the NATO Deployment Medal. SOUCHEN, Douglas Wilson WWII Douglas was born in Oakville, Manitoba in 1922. He served in the Air Force in England and Korea. He was a POW held at Stalag Luft 3 from January 1944 until September 1945. He received the 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Defense Medal, CVSM, War Medal, Korea Medal, and Canadian Centennial Medal. Douglas passed away in 1996. During WWI, he served with the Royal Canadian Army with the 18th Battalion in London, ON. He enlisted in December 1915, serving in England, France and Belgium, until his discharge in May 1919. He re-enlisted in September 1942, serving with the Veterans. Guard of Canada in Canada and England, until being discharged in January 1947. Owen passed away in 1956. Submitted by Queens. Co. Branch #166, The Royal Canadian Legion. SPATES, Irvine T. WWII Irvine was born in Yarmouth in 1911. He served in the Artillery in England and France. He moved back to England and worked as a miner.
