SPATES, Vaughn Eugene SPECIAL DUTY Vaughn was born in Yarmouth, N.S. in 1931 and served with the R.C.E.M.E. in Korea, Japan and Egypt. He served from 1949 to 1978 at various locations. SPEARS, John Gerald WWII Gerald was born in Halifax, N.S. on April 17, 1918 and resided in Ketch Harbour, N.S. before moving to Halifax in 1964, and resided there until his passing on October 11, 2004. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy, Volunteer Reserves as a Signaler in September 1939. He later transferred to the Radar Branch and served in the North Atlantic aboard H.M.C.S. Prestonian (the first ship to deliver German Prisoners to Canada), until 1945 when he returned home for discharge. He then returned to Camperdown Radio Station beginning a 30-year career at the Halifax Dockyards in several departments. John received the C.V.S.M. & Clasp and the 1939-45 Canadian Forces Decoration Medal, and also the Battle of Britain Medal. Independently submitted. SPENCER, Harry Frederick WWII Harry was born and raised in Kentville, NS. He served from 1940-1945, fighting in England, France and Italy. He was a Private. Gunner with the 4th Anti-Tank Regiment. He was awarded the France-Germany medal, CSVM, the Defense Medal, 1939-1945 Star, and the Italy Star. He was a selfemployed well driller after the war. Harry passed away in 1985. Submitted by Kings Branch #006, The Royal Canadian Legion. SPENCER, John WWI John was born in Fortune Bay, Newfoundland in 1897. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served in the Mediterranean Sea. He was awarded the Victory and British War Metals, and was discharged at Nova Scotia in 1919. John served as President of Elsmsdale Branch #048, The Royal Canadian Legion in 1934.
