www.ns.legion.ca 97 Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion MACLAREN, Charles Robert “Bert” WWI Charles, known as Bert to his friends, enlisted in the 40th Canadian Infantry Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force at Truro, Nova Scotia on August 5, 1915. He served in the 40th Canadian Infantry Battalion, G.A.S.G. 9th Canadian Field Ambulance and was discharged on March 20, 1919 by reason of "Demobilization." While serving overseas, Bert was gassed and upon his discharge, he was always very sick. He resided in Truro and passed away in 1934 at the age of 36 years. At 19 years of age, he enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. He joined the Army and was attached to the Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment). George passed away on October 29, 1917, during the defense of the Ypres Salient and is buried at Menin Gate (Ypres) Memorial (Panel 10-58) in Belgium. Submitted by Colchester Branch #026, The Royal Canadian Legion. MACLAUGHLIN, James Douglas “Doug” WWII & Korea Doug was born in Acadia Mines, Nova Scotia on April 2, 1909. In 1939, he joined the Canadian Army as a volunteer at the beginning of World War II, and re-enlisted in October 1946 to make a career with the Army. He also served in Korea. Doug earned the following medals: the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the War Medal 19391945, the Korean Medal, the United Nations. Services Medal, and the Canadian Forces’ Decoration. He was honorably released in October 1963, having achieved the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1. Doug passed away on July 7, 1970. Submitted by Ortona Branch #070, The Royal Canadian Legion. MACLEOD, Angus F WWII Angus F. “Gussie” MacLeod was born on November 30, 1917 at Gabarus, NS. He enlisted in the Army at the beginning of WWII and served overseas with the Cape Breton Highlanders. His medals include the France-Germany Star, the Italy Star, the 1939-45 Star, the Defense Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal. Angus passed away on March 20, 1988, and although his headstone reads “Private,” his actual rank upon discharge was Sergeant. Submitted by Donkin Branch #005, The Royal Canadian Legion. MACLEOD, Malcolm R. WWII Malcolm was born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, N.S. in 1921. He joined the Canadian Army and served with the West Nova Scotia Regiment in Canada, the North Atlantic, United Kingdom, Continental Europe and the Central Mediterranean. He was a member of Westside Branch #126, The Royal Canadian Legion for 38 years. Malcolm passed away in 1982. Submitted by Westside Branch #126, The Royal Canadian Legion.
