BALCOME, Russell WWII Russell was born in Paradise, NS. Originally in the RCMP, he decided to join the Royal Canadian Navy and served on the Atlantic from 1941-1945. The date of Russell’s death is unknown. Submitted by Middleton Branch 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. BALCOME, Douglas Norman WWII Norman was born in Paradise, NS, on January 9, 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served in the U.K. in the Dental Corps from 1941-45. Norman was the youngest of five brothers who all served their country. He passed away on November 19, 2001. Submitted by Middleton Branch 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. AUSTIN, J. Norman WWII J. Norman was born on February 6, 1923 in Skye Glen, NS. He joined the Army at Timmons, ON, on July 30, 1942. He was sent overseas on August 11, 1943, and served in England, Italy, Belgium and Holland. During the Battle of Monte Cassino, the tank Norman was driving was hit, causing him to lose part of his skull and his left eye. On September 12, 1945, he was discharged from the service as “unable to meet the required military physical standards.” He was awarded the following medals: Defence of England, 1939-1945 Star, Italian Star, France & Germany Star, CVSM, and the Holland Medal. Norman resides in Truro, NS. Submitted by Colchester Branch 026 of The Royal Canadian Legion. BALCOME, Donald WWII Donald was born in Paradise, NS, in 1915. He joined the Canadian Army and served overseas from 1941-1945. He passed away in 2001. Submitted by Middleton Branch 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
