When war was declared, Archie enlisted with the Winnipeg Grenadiers, R.C.I.C. and was shipped to Jamaica in 1940. From Jamaica, the Grenadiers were transferred to Hong Kong, which fell to the Japanese in December 1941. Archie was wounded in action and taken as a prisoner of war. Lance Sergeant Archibald Rutherford died on December 5, 1943, at the age of thirty-four years. He was laid to rest in the Yokohama War Cemetery. His medals include the War Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, 1939-1945 Star, and the Pacific Star. Submitted by Colchester Branch 026 of The Royal Canadian Legion. RUTHERFORD, Charles Hector WWII Charles was born in Truro, NS, on October 4, 1918. At twenty years of age, on September 1, 1939, he joined the North Nova Scotia Highlanders as an Infantryman. Charles was shipped overseas in July 1941 and served in England and France. He was discharged in October 1945 and awarded the following medals: War Medal, Defence Medal, 1939-1945 Star, France & Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Charles passed away on August 23, 1986, at sixty-seven years of age. Submitted by Colchester Branch 026 of The Royal Canadian Legion. RUTHERFORD, Stewart McKenzie WWII Stewart was born on September 15, 1913 in Truro, NS. He was employed by Truro Electric Commission and also served in the military as a Reservist with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. In June 1940, Stewart volunteered for Active Service when the Battalion was mobilized. In July 1941, he received his orders to go overseas, where he was employed as a Dispatch Rider in Communications. Stewart returned home from overseas and was released on August 8, 1945. Medals that Stewart was awarded include: 1939-1945 Star, the War Medal, the Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Stewart passed away on December 18, 1997, at eighty-four years of age. Submitted by Colchester Branch 026 of The Royal Canadian Legion. RUTHERFORD, Chester Frederick “Chet” WWII Chet was born in Truro, NS, on April 16, 1921. On February 24, 1942, he went to Halifax and joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. He completed Basic Training in Sydney, NS, and then went to St. Hyacinthe, QC, for Advanced Training as a Wireless Operator. His first boat was a minesweeper, The Swift Current, and in 1943, he was reassigned to the Algoma, a World War Two Corvette. Chet was released from the military on September 7, 1945, and his medals include: the CVSM, 1939-1945 Star, the France & Germany Star, and the Atlantic Star. Chet was a postal clerk with the civil service for thirty-five years and is a thirty-seven-year member of Colchester Branch 026 of The Royal Canadian Legion in Truro, where he currently resides. Submitted by Colchester Branch 026 of The Royal Canadian Legion. RUTHERFORD, Douglas Murray WWII Douglas was born in Truro, NS, in 1907. On June 19, 1940, he joined the Princess Louise Fusiliers and upon completion of Basic Training in Halifax, he was sent overseas. He served in Canada, England, France, Germany and Holland, and then transferred to the Forestry Corp in Scotland. When the Forestry Corp disbanded, he was assigned to Headquarters Company where he stayed until the war ended. He was released with the rank of Sergeant inAugust 1946 and was awarded the War Medal, 1939-1945 Medal (Defence Medal), 1939-1945 Star, France & Germany Star, and the CVSM. Douglas had been a longtime member of Colchester Branch 026 of The Royal Canadian Legion before he passed away in October 2000, at the age of ninety-three.
