Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 167 SHAFFNER, Karl C. “KC” WWI & WWII KC was born in Middleton, NS, in 1897. He joined the Canadian Army, King’s Canadian Hussars in 1915 and served in France. He was wounded in Corselet in 1915 and was sent to England for treatment. Amazingly, he was treated by Dr. Sponagle, a Canadian Army Doctor who delivered him when he was born. He remained in the UK and returned home in 1919. After the war, he attended Camp Aldershot, received his commission and spent World War Two as an instructor in Canada until his retirement from military life. He lived in Middleton and was a Charter Member and Past President of Middleton Branch 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. KC passed away in 1989. He served in the Merchant Navy as an Engineer in England, Hamburg and Holland. He received the Voluntary Service Medal 1939-1945, also the Star 1939-1945, George VI 1939-1945, and the Diamond Jubilee (Legion 60). Calvin passed away in 1997. Submitted by Four Harbours Branch 120, The Royal Canadian Legion. SIDEY, John WWII John was born in 1921. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy. Submitted by F. E. Butler Branch 044 of The Royal Canadian Legion. SHANKS, Harold Joseph WWII Harold was the son of Francis & Mabel (Silver) Shanks. He had two sons and eight daughters. He served with the West North Shore Regiment. He was killed in action in Italy on September 8, 1943 and is buried there. Submitted independently. SHERMAN, Cecil Regional WWI Cecil was born in Canning, NS, in 1903. He joined the Canadian Army, 88th Light AA Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery in 1941 and served in Canada and England. He returned home for compassionate reasons in 1942. Cecil passed away in June 1990. Submitted by Middleton Branch 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
