He joined the Canadian Army in 1940 and served in Canada. In 1944, he left the Army and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Newfoundland until the end of the war. He returned to Stellarton, NS, in 1945. His brother, Bill, and sister, Phyllis, also served. Ralph passed away in May 1977. Submitted by Middleton Branch 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. SWINEMAR, Otis WWII Otis lived in Western Shore, NS. He served in the FIFX Rifles Wartime from July 18, 1940 to July 6, 1942. Otis was a member of Harding Branch 144 of The Royal Canadian Legion. He enlisted in the Army in July 1940, serving with the 87/88th Artillery. He saw action in Italy, Sicily, Belgium, Germany and Holland, before coming home in 1945. James now resides at the VAC unit in Middleton. He was a member of Scotia Branch 025 of The Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted by Middleton Branch 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. SWEET, William F. “Bill” WWII Bill was born on May 18, 1925 in Truro, NS. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in May 1943 and served in the UK, Germany and Holland as a mechanic on fighter aircraft. He volunteered for duty in the Pacific but the war ended before he could serve, so he came home in May 1946. Bill passed away on July 23, 2003. He was a forty-two-year member of Middleton Branch 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted by Middleton Branch 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. SWINAMER, Peter WWI Peter was born on October 10, 1897 and resided in Gold River, NS. He enlisted with the 219th “Overseas” Highland Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force on March 23, 1916.
