He served with the Canadian Army in World War One, and returned home in 1918. Gilbert passed away on June 30, 1963. Submitted by Middleton Branch 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. BROWNELL, Alva Edison WWI Alva was born in Northport, NS, in 1891. In 1914, he joined the Expeditionary Force of the 84th Battalion of Nova Scotia. After basic training, he was sent overseas to England and served in Scotland and France. He returned to Canada in 1919, bringing with him a Scottish Bride and a baby daughter. He received the Bronze Service Medal 1914-1919 and the George V Silver Medal 1914-1918. He was a member of Amherst Branch 010 of The Royal Canadian Legion. Alva passed away in 1965. He joined the Canadian Army in 1939 and transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942. He served in administration within Canada until the war’s end. He returned to Stellarton and resided there until his death in 1978. He was a member of Stellarton Branch 028 of The Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted by Middleton Branch 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. BROWN, Thomas Murray WWI & WWII Thomas was born in Lakelands, NS, in 1891. He joined the 40th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force at Aldershot on August 24, 1915, and served with the 8th Field Ambulance in France and Belgium. In World War One, he received the Belgian Croix de Guerre to recognize the acts of heroism, the British War Medal and Victory Medal. In World War Two, he received the Veteran Guards War Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Thomas passed away in 1986. Submitted by his granddaughter, Linda L. Yorke. BROWNELL, Edison Hayward WWII Edison was born in Northport, NS, in 1920. He joined the West Nova Scotia Regiment in May 1940 and went overseas in August. He was promoted through the ranks and was promoted to First Lieutenant, returning to England, he volunteered to serve with the North Nova Scotia Regiment in France. He served in England and France and was wounded in action. Edison held the following war medals: 1939-45 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, CVSM, War Medal 1939-1945. Edison was a Life Member of Amherst Branch 010, before he passed away in 2006. Submitted by Amherst Branch 010 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
