Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 109 HAWES, Hugh Alywin WWII Hugh, son of Walter and Bertha Hawes of Spry Harbour, was born in 1914. He enlisted in 1944 and became a qualified Dispatch Rider (Signals) C. with the Royal Canadian Corps Signals. He took his training in Ontario and served in Debert, NS. He married Ethel May Fisher of Upper Musquodoboit and lived in Eastville, where Hugh farmed and worked in the woods. He passed away in 1985. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. HAWKIN, Donald Keith WWII Donald was born in Prince Albert, SK, in 1915 and served with the Royal Horse Guards, 8th Army (British) in Palestine, Africa, Iraq, Syria, Cyprus, Egypt, Italy, Holland and Germany. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Africa Star (8th Army Bar), the Italy Star, the France-Germany Star, the 1939-45 Defence Medal, the 1939-45 War Medal, the Coronation Medal. He was wounded once and had malaria in Syria. Donald passed away in 1995. Submitted by the Alvin Foster Memorial Branch #098 of The Royal Canadian Legion. HENDERSON, Calvin Murray WWII Calvin, son of Charles and Bessie (Bonnyman) Henderson of French River, Colchester County, was born in 1909. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers at No. 6 Depot in Halifax in 1942 and served overseas with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and was discharged because of illness. He married Thelma Benedict and lived in Hantsport, NS. Calvin passed away in 1977. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. HEMEON, Gary Wayne PEACETIME Gary was born in Shelburne, NS, in 1945 and served with the Canadian Guards, the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, logistics Branch in Canada, Cyprus and Cambodia. Gary is an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Loyalist Branch #063. Upon retiring, he returned to Shelburne and is actively engaged in The Legion, as well as other organizations. Gary is on the Executive and is Chaplain for the Branch. He assists in the Poppy Campaign, November 11th events and other committees. Submitted by Shelburne Branch #063 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
