Kelly was born in 1976 in Halifax, NS, and was raised in Lower Sackville, NS. In 1998, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree and in 2002 his Bachelor of Science degree in Therapeutic Recreation, both from Dalhousie University in Halifax. In 1995, he joined the Princess Louise Fusiliers in Halifax as a reservist and was later transferred to 1 Field Ambulance in Edmonton, AB. He served Canada with honour in Afghanistan from February - October 2008 as a field medic with 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry based out of Shilo, AB. Submitted by the Kelly Family. KENNEDY, Arthur Logan WWI Artie (or A.L.), as he was known, was born in 1896, the son of David and Margaret (McMullen) Kennedy of Upper Stewiacke Village. He was sent overseas and saw front line action in 1916. He was once buried alive in debris from an enemy shell until someone saw his hand move and rescued him. Later, he was seriously wounded when hit in the head by a bullet. He spent months in Germany and British hospitals. Artie worked as a police officer in England for a time. He married Lillian Cooper of Bexhell-on-Sea, Sussex, England. After the birth of their first son, they came back to Nova Scotia and lived in Upper Stewiacke where Artie farmed. He served as County Councillor for the area at the time. He passed away in 1982. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. KENNEDY, Ruby Margaret WWII Margaret, daughter of Earl and Minnie (Thorpe) Kennedy of Cross Roads and Otter Brook, was born in 1925, and enlisted with the Canadian Women’s, Army Corps. After basic training in Kitchener, ON, she was posted to Halifax with the Canadian Signals Corps for the duration of the war. She married Henry P. Fisher of Halfway Brook and lived in various parts of Canada before retiring to Halfway Brook. She passed away in 1999. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. KENNEDY, Dorothy Marie WWII Dorothy, daughter of Arthur and Lillian (Cooper) Kennedy of Upper Stewiacke Village, was born in 1920 and took a business course at Success Business College in Truro before joining the RCAF (Women’s Division). She was posted in Dayton, Ohio, where she served until the end of the war and was promoted to Corporal. She married Alfred Bishop and lived in Laval, Quebec, later in Truro, NS.
