Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 141 MacKENZIE, Kelvin WWII Kelvin was born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1918 and served with the # 1 E.F.T.S., the # 14 Squadron, # 40 Squadron, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force at Espirito Sentos, Guadalcanal at Cookham Field and Henderson Field, Bougainville, where he operated Kittyhawks and later the Vought-Corsair fighter planes against the Japanese. MacKINNON, Aubrey WWII Aubrey was born in Gabarus, NS, in 1922 and joined the Canadian Army (66 Transporter Tank) and served in Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Holland. He was discharged in April 1946. He received the 1939-45 Star, the France-Germany Star, the Defence of Britain Medal, the CVSM & Clasp, the Victory Medal, the Holland Medal and Operation Overlord (Normandy). Aubrey has been a member of the Calais Branch #162 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 62 years. Submitted by Calais Branch #162 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MacLEAN, Laird WWII Laird was born in Glace Bay, NS, in 1927 and joined the RCAF Squadron 433, Group 6 at age 16 in Sydney, NS, and was attached to the RAF Bomber Command. He was shot down over France in July 1944. He became a POW at 17 years old and was part of the “Two Hundred Mile March” when his German captors abandoned their prison camp to escape advancing Russian troops. After the war, Laird worked as a Meteorologist/Technician with Environment Canada. He was inducted in the Ottawa/Carleton Place Veterans Hall of Valour in 2008. Laird passed away in 1980. MacLAUGHLIN, James Douglas WWII & KOREA James was born inAcadia Mines, NS, in 1909, son of Frank Gordon andAnnie Ethel (Schurman) MacLaughlin and joined the Canadian Army in 1939 and served in both WWII and the Korean War. He made the Army his career working as a clerk in the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps and was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer, Class 1. He married Vera Fleck, daughter of Sidney and Jane (McCulloch) Fleck of Middle Stewiacke. They retired to Middle Stewiacke where they built a new home. James passed away in 1970.
