Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 167 PREST, Max Hawes WWII Max, son of Melvin and Susan (Hawes) Prest of Cross Roads, was born in 1916, and enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy in 1940. He held the position of Stoker onboard corvettes, serving also on three vessels: the Stadacona, Bitterssweet and Venture Sunbeam. He was discharged in 1941 for medical reasons. Max married Marion Adeline Arsenault of Egmont, PEI, and they lived in Cross Roads. He drove a school bus for 17 years. Max passed away in 1978. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. PREST, Spencer Charles WWII Spencer, son of Melvin and Susan (Hawes) Prest of Cross Roads, was born in 1918 and sailed for England in 1940 and spent nine months attached to the British Navy working on anti-aircraft gun as a Gunner. He was overseas for five years. He married Norma Kathleen Henley of Spry Harbour, and lived in Cross Roads where he worked as a carpenter. He passed away in 1998. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. PUTNAM, Charles Edward WWII Charles, son of Robie Flemming and Pollie (Upton) of Middle Stewiacke, was born in 1911. He worked as a farmer before enlisting in 1943. He served in the Canadian Dental Corps in Canada and England. After the war, he lived in Brookfield working at various jobs. He died as a result of a truck/train collision near Shubenacadie in 1969. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. PURCHASE, Henry Eric WWI Eric, son of Henry Archer Purchase of Harborne, Birmingham, England, was born in 1895. He was sent to Canada at age 16, and lived with a family at Cross Roads. He enlisted in 1916 in the 193rd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. After the war, he married Lila MacKay, daughter of J. William and Emma Jane (Deyarmond) MacKay of Burnside. They lived in Chicago, where he worked on the railway. When he retired, they returned to Upper Stewiacke, building a new home in Otter Brook. Eric passed away in 1961.
