Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 183 SHANNON, William George KOREA Bill was born in Ontario in 1935, son of Charles and Marjorie Shannon. He joined the Canadian Navy in 1953, and took his basic training at Cornwallis, NS. In 1954 - 1955, he served in Korea in a peacekeeping role. He later joined the RCAF and became an Aircraft Engineer Technician. He married Norma McCoul of Eastville and settled there. He operated a service station in Upper Stewiacke Village for a time and then had a private sawmill on his property. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. SHREENAN, Burton KOREA Burton was born in Stellarton, NS, in 1934 and served with the Canadian Air Force in Korea. Burton has been a member of the Calais Branch #162 of The Royal Canadian Legion for the past twelve years. Submitted by Calais Branch #162 of The Royal Canadian Legion. SMITH, Graham Cox WWI Graham, born in 1887, was a twin son of David Holmes and Martha (Fulton) Smith of Otter Brook. He enlisted while in Western Canada and served overseas. He was wounded in the face while fighting at Ypres. After the war, he homesteaded in Saskatchewan and developed a business growing and selling wheat. He passed away in 1956. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. SLAUENWHITE, Charles H. WWI Charles joined the CEF on November 17, 1914, at Saint John, NB. He was born in Mahone Bay, the son of James and Emma Slauenwhite. Charles was posted to the 26th Battalion (The Fighting 26th) and endured seven days of heavy shelling during the last week of March 1916 in the St. Eloi area of the Ypres Salient near Hill 62, with twenty-one men of that battalion being killed. Charles’ date of death is recorded as March 31, 1916. He is buried in plot 3 B 6 of the La Laiterie Military Cemetery in Belgium. Submitted by Mahone Bay Branch #049 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
