Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 17 BENVIE, Irene Mae WWII Irene Mae, daughter of John Will and Janie (Dean) Benvie of Cross Roads, was born in 1920 and joined the RCAF (Women’s Division) and was stationed in Halifax and St. Hubert, Quebec, during WWII. After the war, she married Carl Sidney Fleck, son of Sidney and Janie (McCulloch) Fleck of Middle Stewiacke, and they lived in New Brunswick. She passed away in 1956. BIGELOW, Percy KOREA Percy, son of Frederick and Maria (Harendarcikova) Bigelow of Stewiacke, was born in 1933 and enlisted in 1950 in Halifax and trained in Picton, ON, and Shilo, MB, serving as a gunner in Korea under RCH Artlillery. He and his wife, Sylvia, live in South Branch. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. BISHOP, Evelyn Katheleen WWII Evelyn was born in 1922 in Kentville, NS, and enlisted with the RCAF, Women’s Division serving in Canada, Ottawa, Toronto, Gander, and overseas. She married Gerald Ritza (now deceased), a WWII veteran, in 1947 and has two sons: Greg Ritza, a Sales Manager, and Peter Ritza, a Toronto Metro Police Constable. Evelyn has four grandchildren. She now resides in the Toronto area in a service position with the Postal Division. Submitted by her brother, Bob Bishop, of Elmsdale Branch #048 of The Royal Canadian Legion. BIRMINGHAM, Melbourne James SPECIALDUTY& PEACETIME Melbourne was born in Sydney Mines, NS, in 1942 and served both in the Army and Air Force with the 2nd Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders and the Royal Canadian Navy, UN Police in Canada and Kosovo. He received two Medals of Bravery: the UN Volunteer Medal, 2 UN Mission in Kosovo Medals, the Golden Jubilee Medal, the Police Exemplary Medal and the Nova Scotia Long Service Medal with Bar.
