Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 201 WALKER (HALFORD), Mary Elizabeth WWII Mary Elizabeth was born in Essex, England, in December 1921 and joined the British Army ATS which was one of the services available to women during WWII. Mary’s duties involved operations at Radar Installations. She also became a war bride, marrying Raymond Walker. They moved to Sydney Mines in May 1945. She passed away in May 1992. Submitted by the Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion. WALKER, Raymond WWII Raymond was born in Sydney Mines, NS, in December 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in November 1940 in Halifax, just one month before his 17th birthday. He served in the Atlantic Coastal Area onboard converted yachts until being shipped to Scotland and then to England. In 1941, he participated in the Dieppe Landing, then on to North Africa (Algiers) and Sicily. Raymond also participated in the D-Day Landings. His next posting was serving aboard torpedo boats in Belgium. He finished his tour in Holland in 1945 and was finally sent home and was discharged. He received the following decorations for his service: the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, the North Africa Star, the Italy Star, the France/Germany Star, the CVSM with Dieppe Bar, the British Defence Medal and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. WALLACE, William Humphrey WWII William was born in Berkenhead, England, in 1916 and was the son of William and Grace (Humphreys) Wallace. He emigrated to Canada in 1912 at the age of 16 working as a farm labourer and in lumber mills until he enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1940, serving in England, Sicily, France, and Germany as a Gunner and Radio Operator until 1945. He married Bessie Patterson, daughter of William and Ethel (Henderson) Patterson of Upper Stewiacke. In 1959, he joined the United Nations Peace Corps serving overseas until 1960 with the RCEME. He returned to Upper Stewiacke and worked as a mechanic in the military at Halifax and Debert until 1959. After retiring from the military he worked as the School Board Bus Garage as a mechanic until 1981. William passed away in 2002. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. WALKER, William “Bill” WWII William was born in Stafordshire, England, in May 1913. He joined the Princess Louise Fusiliers 11th Infantry Brigade serving in Italy and Belgium.
