Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 27 BURRIS, Laurie Bernard WWII Laurie, son of Fred and Lucy (Dartt) Burris of Beaver Brook, NS, was born in 1916, and was a private in the Canadian Forestry Corps, 13th Company working as a truck driver in Scotland. He married Jeannie McBean of Liff, Scotland, and returned to Nova Scotia with Jeannie to farm in Middle Stewiacke, until his death in 1953. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. CAMERON, Bruce WWI Bruce was an 18-year-old from Mahone Bay, NS, when he joined the CEF and was assigned to the 16th Battalion (the Canadian Scottish). He would survive wounds received in October 1915, but he would be killed on June 13, 1916, during the Battle for Hill 62 in the Ypres Salient. Bruce was buried at the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground outside Ypres, however, at some time during the battle for Ypres Salient, the burial ground was shelled by German artillery and his remains were disrupted. Today, “Special Memorial” H 28 can be found at the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground making note of the fact that his remains are buried somewhere in the cemetery. CAMPBELL, Harold Edward WWII Harold, son of John and Ann (Bonin) Campbell, was born in Halifax, NS, in 1909, and enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1933, serving in Canada. He married Thelma Weatherbee and lived for a number of years on Stewart Hill, Upper Stewiacke. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. CAMPBELL, George Burris WWII George, son of Hugh and Emma (Burris) Campbell of Middle Stewiacke, was born in 1910, and enlisted in 1941 with the Royal Canadian Army Corps and served overseas. In 1948, he married Anna Sophia Christina Bosveld (called Fie) of the Netherlands, whom he met while serving in that country. They lived and farmed in Middle Stewiacke. He passed away in 1975.
