Park in Halifax with the Canadian Engineers, Connaught Battery and was detailed for duty at Ive’s Point, McNab’s Island where he fell sick on August 3, 1918 and died at Cogswell Street Hospital on Sunday, August 11, 1918 of pneumonia. His father was in the 1st Canadian Garrison Artillery and was one of those injured at the Halifax Explosion. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. GILLIS, John Raymond WWII Ray was born in Point Prim, PEI in 1917, the son of the late Clarence and Bessie (MacLeod) Gillis and served with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1939-45. Following his service he joined the Canadian Hydrographic Service retiring in 1979. He looked upon his career on C.S.S. Acadia (Chief Officer) with particular pride. After his retirement he was employed by Northumberland Ferries Ltd. Ray was an avid and creative woodworker as well as an expert knot/rope enthusiast. He was married to Marjorie Ferguson and had 3 children,. Ray passed away on October 14, 2004 and was a member of the Pictou Branch #16. WWI Philip enlisted with the British Remount Commission at Halifax after the declaration of war and after some months of preliminary training he was transferred to Hinton, West Virginia. With the R.A.V.C. he was transferred to Chicago, Illinois and was placed in command of that depot. Philip was born in Halifax. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. GORDON, Stewart WWI Stewart of Dartmouth enlisted with the 63rd Halifax Rifles for overseas service on August 4, 1914 and went overseas with the first draft. On June 7, 1916 he was wounded and was invalided to England returning to the front on September 1918. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
