Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 137 LeBLANC, Abel Joseph WWII Abel was born in Petit de Grat, NS in 1921 and joined the West Nova Scotia Regiment at age 19 on August 2, 1940 and did his boot training and was posted overseas to England preparing for the invasion of Italy being sent to the Hitler Line. For his courage he was promoted directly to Sergeant. During this period, he was captured but within 2 days he was back with his unit but was wounded on May 23, 1944 and was sent back to England for recovery. He was discharged on February 3, 1945. Abel received the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Bar and the 1939-45 War Medal. He was a member of the Isle Madame Branch #150 for 55 years. LeBLANC, Joseph Napoleon WWII & KOREA Napoleon was born in Petit de Grat, NS on October 21, 1919 and joined the Royal Rifles Of Canada 22nd Regiment and was posted to Aldershot for basic and advanced training and was transferred in September to the Royal Rifles in Quebec and then to Sussex, NB and in December to Newfoundland to serve guard duty in Gander, Boothwood and St. John’s, NL. Napoleon was a prisoner of war from December 25, 1941 to August 1945. In 1946, he rejoined the service serving with the Royal 22nd Regiment, Quebec. With the exception of a peacekeeping tour in Korea in 1954, he remained in Val Cartier, PQ for 17 years as a drill and communications instructor. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Pacific Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Bar, the Hong Kong Bar, the Defence Medal, the 1939-45 War Medal, the UN Medal Korea, the Korea Volunteer Service Medal, the Peacekeeping Medal and the Canadian Forces Medal & Bar. He has been a member of the Isle Madame Branch #150 for 26 years. Napoleon passed away on July 12, 2006. Submitted by the Isle Madame Branch #150 of The Royal Canadian Legion. LeGARD, Marjorie Dianne Hankinson PEACETIME Dianne was born in Middleton, NS on September 1, 1937 and joined the CWAC (Militia) as a pay clerk at 101 Manning Depot in 1956. In January 1957, she joined the RCN and trained as a Navigational Plotter. In 1963, she was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant in the CWAC. Dianne was the first woman from the Atlantic Miltia area to take the Combat Team Commander’s Course at Base Gagetown and qualified as a Major. She is currently serving as President of Branch #001. LeBLANC, William Thomas WWI & WWII Bill was born in Port Felix, NS in 1896 to the late Charles and Margaret (King) LeBlanc and joined the Navy and fought in both world wars. He lived in Halifax most of his life and married Evelyn Simm from Newcastle upon Tyme from England in Halifax in the late 30’s or 40’s.
