Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 145 MacNEIL, James Patrick Afghanistan Born in Glace Bay, on July 17, 1981, Jimmy was the son of James Patrick MacNeil and Velma MacNeil (nee Stubbard). He was a member of the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment based at CFB Petawawa and was killed in action Monday, June 21, 2010 in Afghanistan during his fourth tour of duty. He was affectionately known as “little Jimmy”. He joined the military after high school and eventually obtained the rank of sergeant. After his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, Jimmy received the Master Corporal of the Year Award. Upon receiving this award he advanced quickly through the ranks. He was serving with the 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment at the time of his death. Jimmy had a great sense of humour and a smile for everybody; he loved baseball, rugby and the Montreal Canadiens. He loved his country and was a proud Caper. WWII Andrew was born in Arichat, NS on September 9, 1923 and joined the RCN in Halifax in February 1943 and did his training in Point Edward, Cape Breton. He did mine sweeping in the English Channel and prior to the D-Day Invasion he volunteered for Pacific War but was sent to Halifax and was discharged in August 1945. After the war, he worked for DNDArmament Depot as a boilermaker for Babcock &Wilcox and then started his own business in 1972. He’s been a member of the Isle Madame Branch #150 for 45 years. Andrew received the Atlantic Star, the 1939-45 War Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Bar and the 1939-45 War Medal. Submitted by the Isle Madame Branch #150 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MARTEL, Frederick J. KOREA Frederick was born in Rockdale, NS in 1929 and joined the Army on January 10, 1951 at Halifax and did his boot training at Camp Borden, Ontario and then for advanced training at Val Cartier and then in 1951 took a paratrooper course and got his wings in 1951. He then went to Korea in October 1951 and returned to Canada in March, 1953. He was then posted to Val Cartier and transferred to Black Watch Camp Aldershot in October of 1958 and then to Halifax #1 Depot for 6 years and was discharged in June 1965 doing 14½ years. Frederick was president of the Isle Madame Branch #150 for 18 year and has been a member of The Legion for 55 years. He received the Korea Medal Canada, the Korea Volunteer Service Medal, the Special Service Medal, the Korea Medal-UN, the Queen‘s Jubilee Medal, the Canadian Decoration and the Democracy 250 Medal. WWII Leonard was born in Little Anse, NS on November 28, 1927 and joined the Merchant Navy in Halifax in April, 1944 and sailed on the tugboat Joseph W. Martin to Chebucto Light assisting convoy ships in distress. He got out in the Fall of 1944 and worked at dockyard and at magazine depot getting ammunition for vessels for 35 years and retired in 1990. He married Ann Madden in 1953 and had 4 children. Leonard received the Voluntary Service 1939-45 Medal, the Battle of Atlantic-Lieutenant Governor of NS and the High Commisor of Norway, Museum of the Atlantic honouring those who served Corvette in Halifax, SS Sackville Convoy Cup with ribbon placed around the neck.
