Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 147 MARTEL, Richard A. “Dick” PEACETIME Dick was born at Woodstock, NB in September 1934 and joined the RCAF in 1954 and became an air navigator serving at several bases in Canada as well as in France and Germany retiring from CFB Greenwood in 1985. He now resides with wife Diane in Middleton, NS and is a Past President and Life Member of Branch #001. Dick was awarded the MSM in 2009 and has been Branch Treasurer for 19 years. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MARTELL, Francis J. WWII Francis was born in Arichat, NS on February 24, 1930 and was the youngest to enlist with the Merchant Marine in April 1944 at age 14. He was placed a galley boy on the SS Surf and sailed from Arichat to Canso and Musgrave a daily service carrying general cargo. After a month he transferred to cook on the SS Ulna transferringArmy personnel to Sydney, PEI and Halifax staying with the Ulna until Christmas 1944. Francis served in Eastern Canada, the West Indies, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Poland and New England. He married Lucy Mary Marchand of Louisdale and had two children. Francis worked for 20 years at a heavy water plant in Port Hawkesbury as a store manager and then retired. He received the Canadian Merchant Navy Association Service Medal 1939-45, the Voluntary Service Medal 1939-45, the Atlantic Star and the Thank You Canada Medal. Submitted by the Isle Madame Branch #150 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MASON, Robert Burns WWII Robert was born in Isaac’s Harbour on November 26, 1919. He was a Sergeant in the Air Force. Robert passed away on November 9, 2005. He will always be remembered and respected for his years of service. Submitted by the Torbay Branch #117 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MARTELL, Harold Joseph WWII & PEACETIME Harold was born in Poulamond, NS in 1925 and joined the Army at age 18½ in April 1944 and took his basic training in Yarmouth and advances training in Aldershot. On October 2, 1944, he embarked on a troop ship for overseas and disembarked in Liverpool, England. In April 1945 he joined the West Nova Scotia Regiment and saw action in Holland and took part in the liberation of Holland. In June 1945, he was transferred to the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and served in the occupation force in Germany. Harold was discharged on July 26, 1946 and was in the reserve Army from September 1950 to December 1952. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the France/Germany Star and the 1945 Dutch Medal. He’s been a member of the Isle Madame Branch #150 for 24 years.
