WWI L.C. enlisted on October 12, 1915 in the Canadian Engineers at the early age of sixteen and sailed for England on April 27, 1916 and served there until his return to Canada on August 4, 1918. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. ANDREWS, T.J. WWI T.J. enlisted on April 13, 1916 in the 219th Battalion “A” Company and sailed for England the following September and to France in November with the “D” Company, 13th Battalion and was wounded at Vimy Ridge and was then returned to England for seven months. He was back on the firing line in November, 1917 and was wounded again at St. Pierre. He then went to Etaples (the base) for five months and then to the front line again receiving his third wound at the battle of Arras. He was then sent to England and then back to Canada. Besides being wounded three times, T.J. also suffered from the deadly gas fumes. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. AVERY, Alphonso WWII Alphonso was born in Larry’s River, NS in 1922 to Abraham and Martha Avery and joined the Royal Canadian Army as a “Gunner.” Alphonso was killed overseas in France on July 26, 1943 at the age of 22. He leaves to mourn his parents and four brothers. We will always remember Alphonso and the ultimate sacrifice he did for our country. Submitted by the Torbay Branch #117 of The Royal Canadian Legion. ATKINS, Melvin Graydon WWI Melvin enlisted as a private in November 1916 and trained for three weeks at Toronto and then sailed with the mechanical transport reaching France in March, 1917. From that time until the Armistice, he was engaged in driving munitions and men to the trenches over roads that were many times under shell fire and exposed top aerial attack, but he escaped without a scratch, his only casualty being an attack of Spanish Influenza which sent him to hospital.
