WWII David was born in Larry’s River, NS on December 26, 1924 and joined the Army Militia on September 17, 1942 serving in Canada and was discharged on April 21, 1947. Dave lived in Larry’s River all of his life. He married Mary Edna Delorey and they had 7 children. He worked for the School district as a bus driver and retired from that job. Dave is a member of Branch #117 and we will always remember and respect his years of service. Submitted by the Torbay Branch #117 of The Royal Canadian Legion. AVERY, Ernest Sylvester WWII Ernest was born in Larry’s River, NS in 1923 and joined the Canadian Army in May 1942 at age 18 and did his basic training in June in Yarmouth, NS. From there he was sent to Kingston, Ontario to learn Morse Code and on June 3, 1944 he landed on the beaches of Normandy. He survived this ordeal and took part in the liberation of France, Belgium and Holland. Ernie was wounded on February 26, 1945 when he crossed into Germany when the Brengun Carrier he was travelling in drove over a land mine. His injuries were severe and he returned to Canada in July 1945. He served with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa and was honourably discharged on January 31, 1946 and was awarded the 193945 France/Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Clasp and the 1939-45 War Medal. Ernest passed away on December 26, 2000. He was a Chartered Member of Branch #117 and will be forever remembered and respected for his years of service. AVERY, Howard William WWII Howard was born in Larry’s River, NS in 1923 to Jeffrey and Mamie (Gerrior) Avery and was a veteran of WWII serving in France and Germany with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders landing in Normandy on “D” Day. Howard also had two brothers that served overseas, AbramAvery, who arrived home as a casualty after being in action in France, Belgium and Holland where he was wounded, and, Lance Corporal Emmett Avery who was in action in Italy and the Western Front. Howard was a Life Member and Past President of the Canso Branch #46 of the RCL. He was married to Thelma Hurst and had 4 children. He passed away on April 14, 2001. AVERY, Howard George KOREA Howard was born in Larry’s River, NS on October 25, 1925 to Clement and Emily (Richard) Avery. He moved to the United States at a young age and was a Korean veteran having served with the US Army. Prior to his retirement, he worked for many years as a truck driver with Canada Dry Beverages. He was married to Florence LeBlanc formerly of Cape Breton. Howard passed away on March 12, 2003. We will always remember and respect him for his years of service.
