Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 195 SUTHERLAND (McARTHUR), Isabel Stewart WWII Isabel, daughter of Gideon and Margaret McArthur of Scotland was born in Bothwell, Scotland in 1926 and enlisted in the ATS Women’s Army in Glasgow at the age of 17. She trained in Dalkeith outside Edinburg, Scotland and served in Aldershot, England from October 1943 until January 1946. Isabel received the King George VI Medal, the Voluntary Service Medal and the Veteran Medal of Britain. She met Chester Sutherland inAldershot and they were married in Bothwell in 1945. She came to Canada as a war bride in 1946 and settled in Molega Mines, NS. She’s a Lifetime Member of the Ladies’Auxiliary of the A. L. Patterson Branch #087. Submitted by the A. L. Patterson Branch #087 of The Royal Canadian Legion. TAYLOR, Kirk Afghanistan Sgt. Kirk Taylor (1981-Dec. 2009), was born in Yarmouth, NS and lived in Yarmouth County prior to his deployment, but he spent much of his life growing up in Shelburne County. He was a soldier from 84th Independent Field Battery in Yarmouth and was deployed with the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan. His military career as a reservist started when he joined the Canadian Forces in April 2000. He died on December 30, 2009 as a result of injuries sustained from a roadside bomb while serving with Task Force Afghanistan in Kandahar. Submitted by the NS/NU Command of The Royal Canadian Legion. THORPE, Walter WWII Walter was born in Fredericton, NB and joined the Carleton and York Regiment in 1939. He was in the invasion of Sicily and Italy and was wounded near Mount Cassino in Italy and spent some time in a South African hospital. After being discharged he was moved to the West Nova’s Regiment for a short time and then transferred back to Carleton and York. Submitted independently. TERRIO, Joseph WWII Joseph was born in West Arichat, NS on July 10, 1921 and joined the Cape Breton Highlanders serving in England and Italy. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Clasp. Joseph has been a Life Member of the Isle Madame Branch #150 for 65 years.
