Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 55 CARVER, Gerton Allen WWII Allen, son of Gerton and Zilliah (Smith) was born in Caledonia, Queens, Co. on August 21, 1916 and enlisted in Halifax on July 16, 1942 serving in the United Kingdom. He returned to Caledonia after discharge and married Doris Armstrong and had 3 daughters and one son. Allen worked for the Mersey Paper Co. for many years and later worked at Kejimkujik National Park. He passed away on February 19, 1989. Submitted by the A.L. CARVER, Gerton Allen WWI Gerton was born on February 9, 1887 in West Caledonia, Queens Co. and enlisted on May 17, 1917 in the Halifax Rifles and transferred to the 6th Battalion Canadian Garrison Regiment. He was discharged on May 16, 1919 and he took a course in shoe repair and returned to Caledonia where he set up shop. Gerton passed away on January 13, 1975. Submitted by the A.L. Patterson Branch #087 of The Royal Canadian Legion. CASHIN, John Henry WWII Harry was born in Port Felix on July 17, 1913 and joined the RCAF on July 14, 1941 serving in Canada and on the High Seas. He was a Leading Aircraftman aboard RCAF Marine Craft. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Clasp and the War Medal 1939-45 and was honourably discharged on April 11, 1946. He retired from Shearwater civil service in 1973 and was a founding member of the Maritime Old Time Fiddling Contest and also a participant. Harry was also a member of the Dartmouth Senior Citizens Band and was married to Garnett Richard and had 9 children. He passed away on March 19, 2003 and will always be remembered and respected for his years of service. Submitted by the Torbay Branch #117 of The Royal Canadian Legion. CARVER, Ormonde Clair WWII Ormonde, son of Gerton and Zilliah (Smith) was born on August 11, 1922 in South Brookfield, Queens Co. and enlisted in the 1st Battalion St. John Fusiliers at Prince George on June 13, 1944 and served in the UK and Continental Europe and returned to civil life on demobilization. He received the France/Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Clasp. He married Theresa Canning and had two daughters and one son. Ormonde passed away on October 18, 1995.
