Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 61 COLLINGS, William WWI William enlisted in Halifax in October 1915 and trained in Aldershot all summer and left for overseas in October, 1916 and was stationed at Bramshott and then at Witley Camp and went in the first draft to France about the middle of November being transferred to the 13th Battalion. He was in several big battles until he was wounded in April at the taking of Vimy Ridge and sent to England. William was convalescent for a year and went back to France again in the spring of 1918 and joined the 13th Battalion. He was taken sick and convalescing at base when Armistice was signed. WWI Frederick enlisted with the 66th Princess Fusiliers on November 25, 1915 at the age of 22 and after several months of preliminary training in Canada he sailed to England and was transferred to the 2nd Canadian Pioneers and went immediately into the firing line and proceeded to the Somme district where after heavy fighting, Frederick was wounded in the Battle of Courcellette and as the result of his wounds he returned to England in the Fall of 1916. After his recovery he obtained a position in the office of Hospital Representatives where he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Frederick was born in Halifax, NS. COOKE, Edison Roy PEACETIME Edison, known as “Bud” to his family and friends was born in Isaac’s Harbour, NS on November 12, 1935 and joined the Royal Canadian Army in 1954 posted in Shilo, Manitoba with the Royal Horse Artillery where he trained as a paratrooper and was awarded his “wings” from 1954-1957. He then joined the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers in 1957 in Calgary, Alberta. He was also posted in Gagetown, NB, Egypt, Germany and Borden, ON with the Royal Canadian Dragoons as a vehicle technician. Bud was honourable discharged as a Master Warrant Officer in August, 1980. Bud and his wife, Carrie are enjoying their retirement years in Isaac’s Harbour. He’s a member of the Torbay Branch #117 of the RCL. Submitted by the Torbay Branch #117 of The Royal Canadian Legion. CONRAD, Robert Leroy WWII Robert was born in Whitehead, NS on July 19, 1924 and enrolled in the Canadian Army on November 26, 1943 with the West Nova Scotia Regiment serving in Canada, the United Kingdom and the Central MediterraneanArea. When Robert was injured in Sicily, he was then unable to meet the required military physical standards so he was honourably discharged on June 26, 1945 and was awarded the Italy Star, the 1939-35 Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Clasp. Robert joined the Canso Legion in 1946 and transferred to the Torbay Branch in 1952 where he stayed a member for his remaining years. He held numerous positions such as Secretary-Treasurer, Service Officer, Sick and Visiting Committee, Membership Chairperson and Executive Committee. Robert passed away on March 30, 1992 and will always be remembered and respected for his years of service. Submitted by the Torbay Branch #117 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
