WWI John joined the 85th Battalion at Truro on October 6, 1915 and trained with the Nova Scotia Highlanders at Halifax and Aldershot and was promoted to Sergeant and sailed to England on October 13, 1916 with the 85th and was stationed at Witley Camp, Surrey and crossed to France with this unit in January, 1917 giving up his Sergeant’s stripes. John fought in the battle of Vimy Ridge, on the Arras front and at Passchendaele and was wounded in the eye and gassed losing his voice from the effect of the gas fumes. He was then sent to the Base (France) and then to England. After treatment in various hospitals he was sent home on October 14, 1918 and received his discharge at Halifax the following month and regained his voice after his return. CROOKS, Cecil Gilbert WWII Cecil was born in Goldboro on September 17, 1925 and entered the CanadianArmed Forces at the age of 18 and was stationed in many areas of Eastern Canada and Alberta. He was a Captain in the Air Force transferring as Packaging and Preservation in the civil service to his last posting in Alberta. Cecil and his family retired to Nanaimo, BC in 1987. Predeceased by his wife Elizabeth (Betty) in 1992. They had two sons. Cecil passed away on July 28, 2002 and will always be remembered and respected for his years of service. CROWELL, Moyle (Jolly) Elesmere WWII Moyle was born in Halifax, NS in1919 and enlisted in the Navy on May 15, 1941 and served on the Stadacona Barracks for 3 months, the Halifax Harbour craft from August 10, 1941 to May, 1942, the Shelburne Harbour craft from May 8, 1942 to May 30, 1944, the HMCS Toronto fromMay 31, 1944 to May 22, 1945, Cornwallis, NS from May 23, 1945 to July 24, 1945, Shelburne, NS from July 25, 1945 to August 29, 1945. He was discharged and demobilized on August 29, 1945. Moyle received the Atlantic Star, the 1939-45 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal & Clasp and the Defence Medal. Submitted independently. CROOKS, Courtney Donald MacRitchie WWII Courtney was born in Goldboro in 1922 to Levinia Webber Crooks and the late Chipman Crooks and joined the North Novas in 1943 and became a cook in the Royal Canadian Legion. He married Betty Dorothy Langille. Courtney passed away in 1985 in St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital at the age of 62. He will always be remembered and respected for his years of service.
