Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 81 DOUBLEDAY, Herbert George WWI Herbert went overseas with the 40th Battalion on July 28, 1915 when he was only 16 years old and was drafted to the Pioneer’s and proceeded to France where he was badly gassed in June 1916 at the beginning of the Somme. DOUBLEDAY, Percy John WWI Percy enlisted with the 25th Battalion and sailed overseas and was killed in action by shrapnel after being a year in France. His death took place on July 18th at Lens when he was thirty years of age. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. DOUCETTE, Harry WWI Harry enlisted on March 21, 1916 with the 185th Battalion, “C” Company and trained at Aldershot Camp until October 15, 1916 when he sailed to England where he was stationed at Witley Camp, Surrey. He crossed to France the following December where he was attached to the 73rd Royal Highlanders and fought for a month when he contracted tonsillitis and was sent to several hospitals in England. On May 8, 1918, he again crossed to France joining the 42nd Royal Highlanders and saw some heavy fighting with this unit and was still on the firing line when the Armistice was announced. DOUBLEDAY, Robert WWI Robert enlisted on September 2, 1916 in the Composite Battalion and was transferred to the Depot Battalion but could not succeed in his efforts to get overseas.
