Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 91 FERGUSON, Nicholas Joseph WWI Nicholas, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ferguson, was a member of the popular 63rd Halifax, Rifles and has done his bit for his country. FLEMING, Basil WWI Basil enlisted at 16 years of age in the 63rd Halifax, Rifles and volunteered for the first draft for overseas and was accepted and proceeded top England in January, 1915 and was afterwards transferred to the 3rd Machine Gun Company and in due course went to France. He has been in nearly every “Show” with the Canadians at Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and Lens. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. FLINN, Gerald WWI Gerald enlisted in the 219th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) and went to England and was afterwards transferred to the 85th Battalion and quickly passing through the lower grades was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was present at the battle of Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917 and also at Avion, and the Battle of Passchendaele where his excellent work and ability combined with personal courage earned him the Military Medal as a reward for gallantry and devotion to duty. He was badly gassed at Passchendaele and sent to England and was in hospital for some time. When he was fit again for duty he was sent to Bramshott Camp as an instructor. He was subsequently offered a commission, but modestly preferred to remain an instructor. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. FLEMING, J. Hubert WWI Hubert enlisted in the C.A.S.C. (Mechanical Transport Section) in 1916 and proceeded overseas with his unit and did excellent work in France until the end of the war. His work involved the greatest responsibility, that of conveying ammunition and provisions to the troops in the trenches, often under heavy fire and without cover.
