Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 93 FOLEY, William WWI William enlisted at Halifax on September 10, 1914 and joined the Composite Battalion and was attached to “D” Company. He was promoted to Sergeant in February 1915 and reached England on June 24, 1917 and France one month later. In England, all those receiving N.C.O. rank in Canada were considered privates but Sergeant Foley was able to win his present rank again for service in France. FORGERON, Douglas Charles WWII Douglas was born in west Arichat, NS in 1923 and joined the navy in 1941 at Halifax and after his basic training and a signal course he was posted on a minesweeper in Halifax for convoy duty on the triangle run. After 2 years he was sent to the UK to join a Tribal Destroyer attached to the Royal Navy Home Fleet for duty on the Artic convoy run. On D-Day they escorted the 3rd Canadian into Normandy and took part in the bombardment of the Normandy Coast to soften it for the army to land. He was discharged in 1945. Douglas received the 1939-45 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the North Atlantic Star, the France/Germany Bar, the 1939-45 War Medal and the Soviet War Medal. WWI Walter enlisted in February 1916 after finishing his second year at Dalhousie University and surrendered the advantage he would have obtained by waiting for his engineering examination. He enlisted as a gunner in the Canadian GarrisonArtillery and six months later qualified for a commission receiving in lieutenancy in May of 1916 and was then detailed to one of the outer forts that during the whole period of the war helped to keep Halifax free from attack thus expediting the gathering, equipping and transporting of hundreds of thousands of men as well as countless cargoes of food supplies and munitions. WWII Stanley was born in Forgeron Road, West Arichat, NS on November 25, 1919 and joined the Army inAldershot and got his basic training and went to England and on toAfrica to help with the Fifth General Hospital. From there to Sicily and Rome, Italy and Holland. He was discharged in Aldershot and worked on opening the Lennox Passage Bridge and on the canal in Port Hawkesbury. He married Claire LeBlanc and has been married for 64 years. He received the Medal of Holland, the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the War Medal 1939-45, the Defence Medal and the Thank You Canada 1945.
