Old friendships will be renewed through these pages, and new ones made, relatives found and history relived. Military Service Recognition Booklet 4 Call us today to ask about our AED training and a ordable, easy to use AED units. AEDs - Lifesaving made simple About 40,000 Canadians experience cardiac arrest every year. That’s one cardiac arrest every 12 minutes. Defibrillation improves survival rates by up to 30% if delivered in the first few minutes. Making defibrillators easily accessible has the potential to save thousands of lives. AEDs are safe and easy to use but can be more effectively used once you have been trained on how to perform CPR and use an AED. With proper training and awareness, it is very effective in saving lives of those in cardiac arrest. Do you have a defibrillator at your workplace or home? Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 5 Project Chairman’s Message Comrades, It is hard to imagine that another year has passed and we are already holding another Veteran’s Service Recognition Booklet, the 7th edition in a series of publications in which we continue to celebrate and honour the lives and accomplishments of the Veterans of Nova Scotia and Nunavut. As you read through the pages you will notice the wide variance in the “categories” of Veterans we are honouring in this edition: Veterans from WWI, WWII, Korea, Afghanistan, NATO, Peacekeeping and Peacemaking missions around the world, as well as peacetime service. They are all Canadian Veterans who have proudly served Canada as members of the C.F. and we thank them all. I would like to again thank all the Branches and individuals who continue to take the time and effort to research and submit the photographs and bios included in this 7th edition in memory of our Veterans and their comrades. I would also like to thank Fenety Marketing for their continuing assistance in the production of these books and together with NS/NU Command we look forward to issuing our 8th edition in the fall of 2012. In Comradeship, Steve Wessel Project Chairman

At Serenity Lindsay Funeral Homes (and Crematorium), families have come to depend upon us to provide quality service when a loved one passes away. We have become well known for helping families in every way we can ---before, during and after the funeral or memorial service. Caring Service Every detail is considered in outlining an appropriate tribute to your loved one. Because each family has its own traditions, we are dedicated to planning services which reflect individual wishes and preferences. We urge families to: • select music with meaning to them • choose a religious or humanistic service, depending on their faith • choose caskets or urns or vaults which fit their desires and needs. Services from which you may choose include (but are not limited to): Complete traditional funeral services Complete traditional cremation services Memorial Services Graveside Services Pre-arrangement of all services ---- Full consultation and co-ordination of services Cremation Options For individuals preferring cremation, many options are available. These include services from a traditional funeral with visitation, funeral ceremony and cremation, to cremation with a memorial service or immediate cremation with no formal ceremony. We also provide the option of casket rental for cremation services. Of special note, is the fact that Serenity Lindsay Funeral Homes has the only Crematorium in the Annapolis Valley. We offer a variety of pre-payment programs which allows you to control cost – avoid emotional over-spending, and protect your family against inflation. Our Funeral Directors can meet with you in your home or at one of our four funeral homes (Wolfville, Kentville, New Ross and Berwick) to explain the various programs and answer any questions. We can provide you with Canada Pension Plan and Veteran’s benefit information. Advantages of pre-planning services: 1. You decide now what type of arrangements you want and how much you want to spend. 2. All funeral home service charges and merchandise items are price-guaranteed. 3. In the event you move from our neighbourhood, your funds are fully transferable to any funeral home in Canada. 4. 100% of your money is deposited in a special Trust Fund – no possibility of loss. 5. You can modify your arrangements at any time. 6. Spare your family the emotional stress of making decisions during a difficult time. Pre-planning is an important and responsible step which can save both emotional and financial distress. Every year, thousands of Canadians pre-arrange their funerals and statistics continue to show that more families than ever are making funeral arrangements in advance. Since there are many decisions to make, it is important to make your wishes known to your family or to make a prearrangement that lists your specific wishes. Something to think about? Yes, certainly! Feel free to call us, or come in, to discuss possibilities. But, please know this: If prearrangement is not something for which you have planned, we will, of course, still serve you ---- and we will be honoured to take care of your family’s wishes for you in any event. AFTER ALL: “Caring is at the heart of our approach”! Serenity Lindsay Funeral Homes & Crematorium Military Service Recognition Booklet 18
