WWI Charles enlisted in the Dalhousie University and went to France, where he shared with his fellow workers the unremitting and self-forgetting toil that gave the Dalhousie unit such an envied name. His individual work was noteworthy enough to distinguish him for the rank of Sergeant. He was with the unit when it was bombed by enemy aircraft at St. Omer. MacDONALD, Dan WWII Dan MacDonald, from Prince Edward Island, joined the Princess Louise Fusiliers and was a Sergeant with the Cape Breton Highlanders on the SS Monterey, heading to Italy, when the ship was attacked by a German Dornier bomber. The bomber was shot down and the pilot taken prisoner. Dan lost an arm and a leg while fighting in Italy. After the war, he went into politics and became the Minister of Veterans Affairs. He joined the Canadian Merchant Marine, served as Chief Steward on the SS Western Head on the Atlantic seaboard and was killed in action on May 28, 1942. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45, the Atlantic Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar. Submitted by the Isle Madame Branch #150 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MacDONALD, Edward WWII Edward was born in D’Escousse, NS. He joined the Canadian Merchant Navy and served on the SS Trawler Ebb on the Atlantic seaboard. He was killed in action on July 28, 1942.
